I don't think I'll ever get to Africa, but Have had a lifelong desire to own a double rifle. Traveling with such an expensive rifle would make nervous. How do others insure there doubles against theft, loss, etc.?

SIAI,
Sportsmen's Insurance Agency, Inc.
They will insure your firearms against loss or theft. They are charging $1.25 per $100. worth of firearms. They also set the value at replacement cost.

Insurance is the best place to start. However 1.25 per 100$ is way too high. My policy is about 1/3 of that.
The best gun case money can buy with 3-4 locks.
I check at the gate prior to my boarding if my gun case made it on the plane. The gate agent can scan the bar code and can tell you.

I switched to COR-VENS last year and just renewed. No need to individually list rifles under $10,000 so my DR is the only one I had to list, and blanket coverage up to $300,000.

Think of it this way.If there is any rifle causing stress in your life it deserves to be destroyed that way it will make life better for you.No rifle insurance needed for me just a useless expense.

If you have peace of mind with a 2000 dollar rifle then that is the way to go.

Definitely the most cost-effective option I've found.

I took Chris' advice and ensured all weapons with COR-Vens as well. Hopefully I never need to initiate a call to them but it does make life less stressful when traveling with expensive rifles/shotguns.

I also switched from SIAI several years ago to Cor-veins and have been pleased with the type of coverage, price, and service. Homeowner's requires listing as well and usually a much higher deductible, but that is a viable option. The premium is worth the peace of mind for most folks.

Kelly,

My homeowners rider is through Ace Private Client and it does not require any listing, itemization or appraisal. It simply has an overall policy limit specific for collectibles (and a similar limit for jewelry).

I used to insure my collection with State Farm but stopped after our last move so am in the market for a new insurer as well.

Low rates are always good but has anyone here filed a claim with Cor-Ven? If so, how was the claim handled?

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

A gunmaker I know (you would know too) had some guns stolen at a trade show. He used Core-Vens and told me the claim was paid very quickly. That's my only experience.

Cor-Vens Insurance in Ohio offers a GREAT Guns policy at $380 for $100,000 coverage.

Covers all guns without listing until they get to over $25K each, and cover in home, in car, in shipment to/from purchase or repair, on the airlines, or in the field, on and on. I don't think anyone can beat this??

Policy is issued by The Travelers....even my home/auto/boat/aircraft agent uses them for his guns!!

I have met them at Beinfeld show and they were at SCI this year....good guys!!

Cheers,

I use a heavy gauge aluminum case. It has four latches and is supposed to have a rod that slides through each of them then the rod locks at one end. Instead of using the rod, I put a heavy padlock on each latch. It made me feel more comfortable UNTIL I had to remove each lock at every airport for inspection. Honestly it wouldnt take a serious thief long to defeat the locks BUT four instead of one made me feel better.

I tied a matching bright coloured cloth to each piece of my luggage INCLUDING my carry on, so I could spot each piece from a distance. Marking the carry on was just a another "look this is mine" in case there was any question.

Frankly it never occurred to me to add any special insurance. Yes I worried but more that it would be delayed or end up in Tanzania when I went to Zululand. I traveled with a buddy and we each carried a spare box of ammo for each others guns.

Next time we might each carry one of each others rifles; but HELL half the fun is the adventure.

YES, that is the one.....they are the agents for a TRAVELERS Policy. They have been making the rounds of some of the high level gun shows where collectors move lots of guns around. I have encouraged them to attend Dallas and SCI for the hunting crowd......it has worked just great for me, no hassles with listing, etc...

Cheers,
