If so how does it shoot? I've been thinking of ordering one of them. I had a 16 bore rifle a few yrs ago, and I really liked that rifle for deer hunting in the Sacromento Mountains of New Mexico. The new one from Conn arms looks almost the same as the 16 bore I had. It will be interesting to hear how you do with this rifle on the deer in your area, or anything you have hunted with it already! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Mac, No, I have not received it yet. As I predicted when I ordered it, their original delivery estimate was optomistic. IIRC, sometime mid July was the original est. I called a couple of weeks ago and was told toward the end of this month. I will call them next week to confirm. It isn't imminent since they haven't asked for Fed Liscense yet. I'll report when I get it. JPK Free 500grains

Good i hope you get it earlier enough to work it a bit before your deer season there! I'm waiting the here a first hand report on them. I'm certain I will be placeing and order there after! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Plenty of time until "modern" gun season, which doesn't open here until the Saturday following Thanksgiving. I hope it shoots well with the same ammo my son's 20ga rifled barrel pump does, for logistics reasons. JPK Free 500grains

Mac, CSM called Friday to confirm that I had ordered my rifled 20ga with the stock with cast on for a lefty. I think they were concerned that I was righty and had gotten cast on/off confused. They asked for a confirmation email. So, I suspect that they are stocking the action this week. They responded that they had received my email confirming 1/4" of cast on, but ignored a request for an anticipated delivery date. As I mentioned, gun season here opens that Saturday following Thanksgiving, so plenty of time left (I hope.) JPK Free 500grains

That sounds like they are getting close! I'm very interested if your first impression of the gun when you get it on the range, and of the over all fit and finish! Have they told you what slugs they are reccomending for it? I have several cape guns that I use Brenneke slugs in, and I find them to be good killers on large wild boar, deer, and moose within 100 yds. They may be just as good at 150 yds but I haven't shot anything that far with them. I'd like to have one for follow-up on Leopard with the Brennekes, and with iron sights, and a combat pistol light attached to the front sling swivel. I hope it gets to you before the season opens! .................... ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Mac37, I went to Cabela's yesterday and spent a profitable hour looking at Mr Keith's collection. Back in the mid to late seventies I was privileged to shoot all of his DR and some of the boltguns and handguns. Wish I'd had a camera crew there to film all of that!! Rich DRSS

I'd have paid for a copy of that film, and paid more to have been in that film shooting with you guys as well. Where does Cabela's have this collection? I probably read everything Elmer wrote in his long career, and most things I toatlly agreed with him on, but like everyone we all disagree about some things. He liked double rifles, and could certainly shoot them, as he could any firearm he ever picked up. Where we parted ways on double rifles was his preferance for single triggers on doubles. Will however will love him for that preferance. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

When the Cabela's company decided to build a store in Boise, they were approached by Ted Keith and others to look at housing the Keith collection. A young lady at corporate looked him up, and was amazed that there was not a museum. They have recreated the two car steel garage building interior in the store. It has all of his stuff, and even a mannequin Keith at his desk. Yes, he has the cigar in one hand, and the cowboy hat is on. He turns from the desk and gives about a fifteen minute speech. It is awesome, sometimes I have to blink to make sure I am not in a time warp and actually hearing him speak. With airfares reasonable, you should fly up some week day and I'll get you at the airport. We can spend a couple hours in the museum. Rich

Wife and I were traveling from Sun Valley to Missoula this summer and went through Salmon. Went to the Chamber of Commerce and asked about the Elmer Keith museum. They had no clue and though " someone" was going to have an exhibit. Glad to know it's nice. Maybe next year. Larry

The CSMC 20ga rifled double has come in. I took a look at it last Saturday but didn't have time to do the paperwork. I'll pick it up this Saturday. Didn't spend much time handling it since I was hurrying to a dove shoot, but first impression is pretty darn good. Some notes: The "splinter" forend is a bit fuller than I would have preferred. Don't love the looks of the banded foresight/regulation adjustment, but its no big deal. The folding rear sight will have to be replaced by a standing blade. I ordered the scope option, and there is plenty of room between the scope's objective bell and the folding blade when up, so there would be plenty of room with a standing blade as well. Wish it had 26" barrels. Might need to take some weight out of the butt to get better balance and handling, but like I said, didn't spend much time handling the gun. The comb height is appropriate for the open sights, and so low for the scope; no issue for me. Might use a lace on comb for when I'm using the scope. For the $'s, seems like a prety nice gun. Wood was nice and in line with expectations, I ordered it with "4x" IIRC. Checkering was good. Case coloring, done by Turnbull I think, was very nice. Engraving nice and tasteful. Came with a 1" sling "loop" installed on the barrels, can't recall what sling equipment was on the butt. Came with a target, but I didn't look at it as time was short. I'll report more soon. Hunting deer here in our shotgun only area, where I do a lot of my deer hunting, will surely be more fun with this gun than with my ol' Mossberg pump! JPK Free 500grains

JPK What was total time from order before it came in ? Did you get measured for the stock ? I am seriously considering getting one. Any info would be appreciated. I have been too busy to shoot it yet, though I did pick it up from the FFL/gun store they shipped it to. The comments I made earlier are pretty much on. I will need to hollow out the butt to get a better balance. Hopefully in the next week of so I will be able to take some photos and do some shooting. The target that came with the gun showed about an inch and a half spread, iirc, about eqaully split right/left and up/down. There was no indication of which hole was from which barrel or of the range or load shot or if the scope was used for the shots. The center of the two shots was about two inches high of center and an inch and a half to the right. Height would be about right for a 50yds target range if you wanted 100yds capability. Should be maybe an inch low at 100yds, based on my 12ga sabot slug experience. Need to move the group left. I'll post photos and report when possible. JPK Free 500grains

No chance yet. Duck season has gotten in the way. But I'll be shooting soon. Here is a more detailed run down of the gun I provided for another AR member: I ordered the gun shortly after I discovered it was offered. I think maybe early March or so. It was delivered early September, which was about two months or so after CSMC's original estimate. So, delivery was in the seven month range for my gun. Might be shorter now, since CSMC didn't begin building them until they had a certain number of orders. Because of an unussually busy schedule, I was unable to pick up the gun when delivered and took a look but didn't have the time for the paperwork the following weekend. Finally picked it up last Sunday. Within the "standard" options choices, CSMC offers two lengths of pull, iirc, and no choice of other than standard drop dimensions. They did offer choice of cast. Thankfully, their longer length of pull choice, 14 3/4" iirc, was within 1/8" of my prefered 14 7/8". Since the pad is a Silvers style, this works well for me, my longer guns and rifles have leather covered pads or checkered wood butts, and the Silvers style pad is a bit "catchy", any longer might have been an issue. Also, the butt is fairly full, more rifle type than thin shotgun type. In addition, the front trigger is pretty flat, or vertical, rather than curved and angled rearward, and more forward in the trigger gaurd, making LOP feel a bit longer. (I haven't actually measured the LOP, but givenwhat I'm writing I think I will.) I believe, iirc, that CSMC's standard drop diensions are 1 1/2" at comb and 2 1/2" at heel. My prefered measurements for a shotgun are a close 1 1/2" at comb and 2 1/4" at heel. The difference is immaterial to me when shouldering the gun. The rear sight is mounted low, and no issue with the 1 1/2" drop at comb. I mounted the scope tonight, which is mounted in Talley QD rings, with the quarter rib milled to accept them. I had to reset the lever positions to get the scope to drop/slide into the rib's machined cuts for the rings and tighten while clearing the barrels, which makes me think the target provided with the gun was shot with open sights. The stock dimensions are for the open sights, but the scope will work well without a lace on comb, it isn't too low for practical scope use. The rear sight is an elevation adjustable folding blade. It is also mounted in front of the "step" down from the quaerter rib top, which is odd or at least not typical looking. I was going to replace it with a standing blade and file in the blade, but now I'm thinking I will wait and see how the original works out. The combo front sight and regulation adjustment is a bit bulky and not really handsome, but it is practical and not unduly obtrusive or ugly. The front sight is a green hi-vis plastic "bead", similar to those red Recknel replacement "beads" you can order from NECG to replace the brass bead for many front sights. I would have been happier with a brass bead, but am not unhappy with the sight. I have a red version on a bolt 375H&H and have found it useful and robust and expect the same from this front "bead." I ordered my gun with a "pistol" grip to duplicate my other double rifles. The grip is fairly open, as it should be, but the grip and wrist are thicker than I would have prefered. Each of my other double rifles is trimmer in the grip and wrist, including my sidelock Thys 458 and my sidelock A&S Farmars 375. That makes the wrist and grip unduly thick in my opinion, since those rifles are withstanding much greater recoil - I think, since I have not yet shot the CSMC. (Both the rifles have long trigger tangs to the grip cap and over the comb top straps, the CSMC has a long trigger tang to the steel grip cap.) If I didn't own and use other double rifles with "pistol" grips for dangerous game huntng, I would order the gun with an English grip. Almost did anyway. The gun balances a bit too far back, imo, either at or just behind the hinge pin, without scope. I will definitely have some wood removed from under the pad, either drilled or drilled and chiseled. Even with the too light barrels and too heavy stock, the gun handles nicely, but I prefer a bit more weight distributed toward the muzzles. I tried to find my digital scale to weigh the gun, but haven't come across it yet. The gun seems lighter than the quoted ~7lbs, even with the scope on it. Recoil might be brisk. Chambers are 2 3/4" and no indication of what ammo was used to regulate the gun was provided. I bought some Winchester Partition Gold and some Remington expanding brass mono sabot loads to try. Advertising photos in magazines show the Reminigton ammo. I oredered the gun with two triggers and upgraded wood, as well as with the scope option. The scope is a 2.5x20 Leupold, iirc, it is small and light and it will work well for this gun. Iordered upgraded wood, "4X", I believe, and the wood is within expectations. Checkering is good, but could be finer, as in more lines per inch. Engraving is small scroll and without a loop or magnifying glass looks nicely done. I ordered case colors and the job, done by Turnbull, I think, is very nice. The gun came equiped with a front barrel mounted stud and a rear butt mounted stud compativle with Michaels sling swivels. It also came with very nice QD sling swivels a cut or two above Michaels. As mentioned, I haven't shot the gun yet and hope to do so within a week. So far, the gun seems a pretty good value. It isn't as substantial as a fine double rifle, but it doesn't cost near as much either. Inspection reveals that the guns is largely machine made, with limited had finishing, but the price surely reflects that. Some sharp edges when the gun is apart reveal the limited hand finishing. The wood to metal fit is nice and the metal finishes seem nice, particularly the case colors. The buling appears hot blued and not rust blued, again reflective of the cost. One appealing aspect is the short length of the gun. Like all doubles, the "missing" action length makes the gun short and handy. Slung comfortably to the rear over my shoulder, the muzzles were below the peak of my cap. The gun is about four inches shorter than the Mossberg pump I've been using in slug only areas. The barrel on the Mossberg is also 24", btw. I'm looking forward to shooting the gun and ultimately to using it for deer hunting and maybe a trip south for some hog hunting with it as well. I'll try to get some photos of the gun and will report on shooting the gun when I have the oportunity to do so. And then: BTW, should have added that the gun came with a nice set of snap caps and that the trigger pulls were pretty light. Will do some more snap cap shooting, but in any event, the trigger pulls are a big improvement over my slug gun and even a few of my non bolt action rifles. Plenty good for field shooting to 100yds or so. Hope this helps, at least until I can get shooting. JPK Free 500grains

Thanks for your impressions. I handeled and shot snap caps at the eastcoast fine gun show last year and was impressed. But this would be the first double anything I've really considered purchasing.Same use shotgun deer and ????. Thought the price was reasonable for the market. Do post when you get shooting!.....
