What I learned at Cabela's Gun Library.
Is anyone here actually surprised a "chain" gun shop has employees who don't know much about guns? Especially something as unique as 4 & 8 bore rifles and double rifles?

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

It has been my experience that the employees in any gun store, whether it is a big box store or a local gun shop are rarely knowledgeable about firearms, even common ones, much less exotic guns. A rare few have a passion for guns and have learned a lot but most are either hourly employees there until they can get a better job or are ignorant but opinionated shop workers. What is sad is that most casual gun buyers think those folks are authorities because they are behind the counter. Customers get bad advice and even sometimes dangerous advice from them. It's sort of like folks looking at their preacher as an authority figure so they listen to his advice on finance or sex.

Ray's in Dallas May be the biggest independent gun store here. Most guys behind the counter are idiots. There's one blowhard that drives me nuts when I hear him speak. He's incredibly opinionated and doesn't know a damn thing, but will talk like he does. No, it's not the guy from the movie "Borat." He is no longer there.

So it is OK if they are misled by people whom the retailer claims are experts?
Maybe they should leave the sale of doubles and fine rifles to dealers who have put effort into the practice and stick to mass produced off the shelf guns.
Shitcan the whole concept of a "Gun Library" or "Fine Gun Room" if they feel that it is unimportant to represent their wares properly.

Most gun store employees, and esp those working at chains, are hired more for their willingness to work for minimum wage than their firearm acumen.

A much more interesting and unbelievable story would have been that they actually were both knowledgeable and appreciative of English double rifles.
