LegioXWhich DR caliber for this Mammoth?
A great article here, a mother and son found what is probably matching tusks at the same location, 22 yrs apart. An amazing story and an unofficial 162lb tusk!
Personally I'd use the 450/400 I have on order....with backup of course!!

grandveneurThe habitat of the woolly mammoth was a very cold and dry steppe , a mix between steppe and toundra , not very similar with a grass steppe of today .
It's not a elefant hunt in Africa , but more probably similar to a caribou or muskox hunt .
You have to walk a long time in badlands , may be in the snow , and to tent . A DR is imho not the first choice for bad and low temperature climate .
A strong big bore bolt action rifle 460WM or 500 Jeffery for exemple !
Don't forget , the risk to meet a big sabertoothed-cat is high !

BiebsThis being the AR Forums, I'm waiting for a heated argument on which would be an adequate caliber for a Woolly Mammoth hunt :-)

grandveneurThe woolly mammoth is a big animal like a african elefant but with a lot of hair .
The temperature is low , a problem with the pressure in big bore cartridges .
I would take my 500 Jeffery or if i have to take a DR , my 577NE or my 600NE .

Use Enough GunI'd stick with my 450-400. If push came to shove, then the 458 Lott or the 470 NE. But they're all "enough gun".

grandveneurHunting african elefants is always the same ! High temperature , a lot of dust , tuskers under 100Ibs , not our favorite Whisky in the camp ...
Nobody else want to hunt mammoth's with us ?
