Rifles: VC Double .577, and borrowed 7mm and 3.0 Ruger
Rounds for .577 – TSX 750gr loaded by Superior Ammo, CEB 750gr solid and non conventional from Aaron Neilson

Picture of buff is below link

First of all, let me thank several people on AR who gave me very valuable advice. While I had shot a buff with a .470, I was unsure about buying my own since I had a very good and accurate Gibbs .505.

So thanks to all who convinced me to buy one and who helped. SRose convinced me I should buy a .577, Cal Pappas was very helpful although I did not get a .600 (I enjoyed his book), Mac for his advice and DRSS, Todd Williams, Biebs, Mike Jines, CCMDoc who owned the .577 before Aaron Neilson (great buffalo carving on the action), and many others. I m particularly grateful to Aaron Neilson who first sent me the rifle and ammo to try out before buying it. As posted elsewhere, the rifle is great and is very accurate.

Awesome LR3!
That is one helluva buff.
Your 577 now has a few exciting buffalo hunts to its credit and you should be rightly proud. Glad that double and that caliber living up to their reputations.

Congratulations and beer to many more.

Thanks CCMDoc. You mention it has taken some now. How many did you take with it if I may ask?

Love the rifle and caliber and I know all too well bullet placement is key but if it's not perfect, there a lot to be said for a .577.

Thanks LHeym500. It would not surprise me as you get used to your 500 you try a .577. Just like drivers tend to progress to larger cars I suspect the same applies to cars.

Unless it is buffalo with a .600 NE DR. Just my opinion, Jon.

Mr. LR3:
Your buff is exceptionally wide compared to most I see pictures and mounts of today. I am not saying I am right about that, and I mean it as a sincere compliment. You have an exceptional animal there. I am happy to be envious. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Thank you for the vote on of confidence. I love my new 500, but it truly is where (I think)I will have to draw the line. It is just at the point of being heavy, recoil is a shove and controllable, and I would not want to carry anything bigger to keep recoil down. If I get another, I will go smaller such as 375 FLM.

I hope you get to make more burger than McDonalds with your new double. I look foward to seeing it.

Thanks For your kind words LHeym500.

I was very lucky and the spread was 47". The PH Japsie was asked to take It into Windhoek for SCI measurement and on that it is the third largest ever in Namibia. I ve never been concerned about SCI measurement but be that as it may be,I don't even have a reference for what it means.

For me the best was shooting at 70yds a galloping big buff, leading like it was pheasant hunting, except with a wonderful .577 and open sights!!

beer Congratulations Sir! That is a very good buffalo and it may be the best one you will ever take! However taking it with your first double rifle is a plus even if it isn't.

The bold print in your post above tells me you will never again be without a double rifle. The .577NE is a historically favorite chambering of many of the old time hunters in Africa, and you having one places you smack in the middle of the DRSS community! Welcome to the fold sir!

Thanks Mac and again thanks for the advice you have given me in previous posts as a double rifle novice. Certainly was very useful and paid off. As has often been repeated here, practicing is a key because you never know what's going to happen and much is muscle memory and subconcious response.

Love the cannon - bull cartoon.

Now I have the taste for doubles I fear I ll follow in Biebs footsteps and get more!?
