Today looked one of these over. Not bad, very plain but not crude. Real walnut, decent finish, good handling. Rear sight has tiny "U", inadequate, should be replaced, rib is dovetailed for scope mounts, one Rem. representative said rings will come with it. $699 retail, $499 wholesale. Specs are 23.5" barrels, lop 14.25", comb drop 1.5", heel drop 2.25", wt. 7.5 lbs. Slot in underrib gives access to toothed wheel which spreads or squeezes barrels, about a foot back from muzzles. When will it be available, I asked, the reply was "soon". The '06 will come next. If the '06 has the usual European tiny spring tooth extractors, no good, but this .45-70 looks good and frankly I was very impressed with it.

I will have to have one for the deerlease.
A double in 45-70 should be about perfect for deer and wild pigs.
Great for black bear over bait too.

I'd like to be optimistic but they had it at SHOT last year too.

Jeffe (moderator in Gunsmithing forum here) talked to Remington specifically about a group order so I think they have some awareness of the interest, but perhaps they do not comprehend the full magnitude.

Did they have an announcement on the Zastava Mausers? Particularly, are they going to import the left-handed ones?

Remington ducked the question when I emailed their support center, indicating all would become clear at the SHOT show. But Rick0311 indicated there aren't any lefty's in the distributors' ads (though the righty's are in there).

Appreciate any info.

Had a right hand Mauser on display. Didn't ask about a LH as I had no idea such a creation existed. Besides, I don't like 98s enough to be curious about them. Ye Olde Kraut Klunker.

Steve, the Zestava Mauser is basicly a FN Mauser action, and though it is an excellent action, I don't believe they make a left hand version of that action.

I don't think you will have to worry about the double! I think that deal already bit the dust! If they do come about, however, I'll buy one in 45-70. At $700, if it is a piece of junk, at least you don't have any money tied up!

I spoke with a good friend of mine who runs one of the largest firearm wholesale companies in the USA. He told me that Remington told him they are definatley NOT going to be here this year.

A left handed Zastava is available in Australia. Short action is definately available, not sure about standard or magnum lengths.

The reason I ask is that Charles Daly is importing the Zastava Mausers in right and left-handed. Both the Mausers and mini-mausers. So I was hoping Remington would do the same.

I have two of the left-handed actions. They only come in 30-06 length with the .473 bolt face, but that's great.

That is great to hear! I have two of the Whitworth African Express rifles chambered for 375 H&H, and they are made on a cleaned up Zestava Mauser action, and I simply love them. My youngest son (43 yrs old), though right handed, has a left master eye, and must shoot left handed. Consiquintly, all his small rifles are Ruger No1s, and the 30-06 actions will not help with the left hand DGR. Remington certainly should use a 375 H&H length action so the 375 H&H,458 LOTT, and 416 Rem Mag, can be made on that action.
The fact that Remington is thinking of useing a CRF action, is a big plus in their favor, and I believe it would be a serious mistake to not build a SAFARI rifle around the traditional African cartridges, both right, and left hand actions, and forget all that ULM, and ULMAG crap. This is, in my view, a chance for Remington to get into the REAL rifle market. Though the bulk of their rifles sales will be in the 30-06 class of rifle, the big traditionals will be the thing the writers will do articles in the gun rags about. Money can't buy better advertizement, than that!

I just purchased a 30/06 today .. $1,284 Canadian. Looks very nice. I will have to do something with the sights, however .. I would think ... The 45/70 will be coming in June and I get one of those too .. I've written a bit about it on the African forum .. Quite a funky looking musket ..

Yo ! I tried out the musket this morning in less than ideal conditions. Since I think that I shall use this funky double for a Namibian wartie this August, I posted the results under the African hunting section .. I really like it, however.
