Fellas:
I received this email and four photos of a gent's double rifle. I have never seen one like it! Here is the email and the pics.
Cal

Mr. Pappas:
I have an unusual double rifle with two different calibers. The right barrel is caliber 11.15x65r Lancaster, but with a heavier powder charge and a steel jacketed bullet. The left barrel is .600 nitro express with German proof marks and a 7.5 gram and a steel jacketed bullet. The lever under the trigger guard opens the barrels when pushed forward. The lower trigger pulls backward and cocks the hammers and the rifle is ready to fire. The action is the Schildzapfenverschhub made by Robert Schrader of Gottingne. The rifle was possibly made for the German colonies before WW!.
Best wishes from Austria. I have all three books of yours.
Alois Schwingshackl

Wow!!!
Indeed I’ve never seen anything like that either!!

Looks like a good idea design session after a night at Octoberfest Hafubrau tent.

Rather unusual double to say the least. What is the idea of the hinged 'side plates'?

The third trigger certainly looks a pillar of strength and the top of the 600NE chamber likewise with that big scallop taken out, could be just photo illusion Confused

I guess regulation would be just each barrel on it's own as you wouldn't be using a follow up second barrel shot on anything, the second barrel/cartridge being either massively too big or too small depending on the game hunted and if needing a follow up shot.

Firing the 'the big six' in that gun ought to lead to damaged fingers. The triggerguard seems too small, leaving no room for recoil.

Funny gun it is.

That's a new one on me! One thing is certain, the guy who totes that thing better eat his Wheatys before he walks out of camp.

It must weigh a ton, but needs it when the left barrel is fired.

I would love to own it, but I doubt it would ever be hunted by me. It would certainly get some discussion at the range, or gun club!

That’s an interesting rifle. It guarantees your immediate follow up shot will either be too much or too little.

I expect it works on the theory of hit 'em with the little one first, and if that don't work, here comes Bertha. Trying to carry that around with that lower trigger not catching everything in sight would be a challenge.

It looks like that hinged side plate locks the action?

I did wonder that but in the first photo showing the action broken open the side plates appear closed and then very next photo with action closed the near-side plate is hinged down. Bloody strange contraption for sure but there must be some rhyme or reason behind it.
