Has anyone loaded these bullets in 470 yet? I called Hornady and they sent me there work up sheet and it shows a RL-15 load of 86.8 grs running at 1950 fps (there max load, a little slow) and IMR 4831 103 grs at 2100 fps and 105.6 grs at 2150 fps. I’m trying to stick with the RL-15 powder. I just purchased 0ne pound of H 1000 and H 4831 to try per there work up sheet. They used Fed 215 primers, Hornady case and they were shot out of a 24” Ruger #1. My Heym also has 24” barrels. NRA Member SCI Member & DSC Member Double Rifle Shooter's Society So. Cal. Chapter

John I’m sure others will respond with loading recommendations shortly. I know Mike70560 has a nice loading using the North Fork FPS which also work for their CPS expanding bullet, here’s a link to his write up: http://forums.accuratereloadin...0101804/m/7281027721 In the interim I ran some QL scenarios for you [470 NE (Pmax = 39160 psi), 500gr DGX/DGS w/24” barrel] and came up with the following information; I’ve included Hornady’s recommended loadings in blue and have shown loadings that exceed Pmax in red: - 86.8grs RL-15 (83.1% fill) = 2131fps & 5040ft-lbs @ 40191 psi - 92.5grs Alliant RL-17 (84.5% fill) = 2150fps & 5131ft-lbs @ 39044 psi - 92.5grs Alliant RL-19 (96.9% fill) = 2137fps & 5069ft-lbs @ 39055 psi - 96.2 grs Hodgdon Hybrid 100V (98.6% fill) = 2137fps & 5068ft-lbs @ 39086 psi - 96.0grs Hodgdon H4350 (92.5% fill) = 2152fps & 5140ft-lbs @ 39058 psi - 97.3grs IMR 4831 (97.3% fill) = 2143fps & 5097ft-lbs @ 39067 psi - 103.0grs IMR 4831 (103.0% fill) = 2264fps & 5690ft-lbs @ 46638 psi - 105.6grs IMR 4831 (105.6% fill) = 2319fps & 5968ft-lbs @ 50570 psi - 94.5grs RL-19 (94.5% fill) = 2139fps & 5082ft-lbs @ 39097 psi - 95.5grs Norma URP (92.5% fill) = 2154fps & 5150ft-lbs @ 39098 psi - 92.1grs Ramshot BigGame (85.4% fill) = 2140fps & 5084ft-lbs @ 39086 psi - 92.5grs Vihtavuori N560 (101.1% fill) = 2176fps & 5256ft-lbs @ 39137 psi - 107.7grs Winchester WXR (104.3% fill) = 2175fps & 5254ft-lbs @ 39079 psi The Hodgdon H1000 powder was not a good option as a compressed loading only produced 2106fps... Remember there can be significant variations between different powder lots. For example, my 470 Evans regulated with 99 grs of IMR 4831 @ 2070fps with the first lot I bought. When I bought the next lot I had to go to 102grs to get the same velocity. Always start low and work up over a chronograph.

I asked Butch Searcy about his regulation load for the .470 NE. His reply; 106gr of IMR 4831 and 500gr Woodleighs. That just has a ring to it; "four-seventy Nitro Express, three and a quarter case..." Oooh-oooh!! Rich thirty-six days.

Rich: Be careful with that load. That seems like a really hot load to me and as 470Evans says, there can be signifigant differences between lots of powder. My 470 regulated with 87 grains of Reloder 15 with a Kynoch wad or 99-100 grains of IMR4831 both loads pushing a 500 grain Woodleigh. Look at the QL projections for IMR4831 above. 105.6grs IMR 4831 (105.6% fill) = 2319fps & 5968ft-lbs @ 50570 psi I wonder about that one as 106 grains of IMR-4831 gives 2,080 fps out of my 470 at 85 deg, with Woodleigh or North Fork 500s. I wonder what bullet those loads used. If it is the 500 grain Barnes solid or soft then maybe. 465H&H
