That's damn nice work. If you ever decide to sell those, let me know I would like to buy one from you. I talked to Dick Murray about making one but he seemed to be stumped on the metal to use in the J rest. Kudo Ron, well done.

I knew, once we got these guys introduced to the Beatles, Levi's, and Coca-Cola it would be all downhill from there for them.
Capitolism isn't nearly perfect, but it is a wonderful thing.

I say we get the Great Bear Chapter of SCI formed up this year, and come 2011 we have a members convention there followed by a pig hunt.

Thanks for the kudo Mike. The metal is easy. It's just a piece of aluminum, 1" wide and about .100" thick. You can get the stuff at your local Home Depot, in 4' lengths, in the section where they sell anodized aluminum angle trim, etc. Also, any metal supply shop, like our local Metal Supermarket, stocks it as well. The stuff is dead-easy to cut and form. Also, it's not going to cause rusting problems if the sling should get soaking wet.

Thank you very much for the effort. Is it possible you could post a photo of the belt laid out flat so I can see the shape needed for the cut of the leather?

Frank,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been busier than a one-armed paper-hanger the last few days. Here are the photos that you requested.

I made the straps 1 1/2" wide and used the French curve that you see in the photos to lay out the transition curve from 1 1/2" to the wide section at the bottom. The shoulder pad is 3" x 12".The "J"-shaped support is 2" wide. If I were making another one, I would make the strap that holds the buckle the same length as the other strap. I would also make the shoulder pad about 4" to 6" longer than this one. This would centre that area over the off shoulder better. Mind you, I'm 6'10" tall and weigh 315 lbs so I need more leather than the average-sized person. Have fun!

It was traditional Russian bear hunt "on den". In the middle of Siberia (Irkutsk region), temperature - 35 C (-31 F). Distance to bear was about 1 meter.
