I took my Kodiak Safari side-by-side rifle shooting yesterday. I ran into a problem. Its side-by-side barrels would not fit my soft and semirigid carrying cases. So I must buy full-length or break-down case.

Suggestions?

When other people are handling my doubles ie baggage handlers, I will only travel with them broken down.

I use the Tuff Pak.

Always travel with your double in the "Taken Down" mode. Soft cases for just traveling while you are in control of the rifle would be like a "Leg-O-Mutton". Perhaps a "Tactical" rifle case.

Any time someone else has control of your rifle you want all the protection you can afford. There is no such thing as too much protection!

Pelican 1700 hard case

I'd go for the Pelican or SKB hard case for travel. The Tuff Pak is great till you have to unload everything for baggage inspection when you have a mixed load in the case (i.e. guns and clothes) For travel on the safari truck you need a good soft case with a side pocket for handy extra ammo or stuff. I like the RED OXX. It will fit any double or bolt gun. Take Down cases travel well but I want to hunt and not spend all my time putting guns to-gether under stress. On safari, take your gun apart and clean it well every night. The dust and grit you may encounter is reason for concern.

I would also suggest that you look at Americase.

You should at least look at their dropped case video. When my double travels it goes in it's Americase!

Regarding breaking down the rifle, Kodiak's Safari is a .72-caliber muzzleloader. It has a one-piece stock. Length reduction, compared with break-open cartridge doubles, is moderate. And I must test to find out whether barrels' removal and reinstallation causes changes of impact.

The case(s) I seek are for driving to-and-from the range or hunting area.

Why in the world would dismounting the barrels change anything? The sights are on the barrels and the wood is the only thing being removed. I assume it's got a hooked breech with a wedge style forearm attachment. It'll be fine!

Just get a good hard side case for normal use. If you're going to fly and the airline baggage gorrilas get their hands on it then step up to one of the premimum cases.

In that case one of the single rifle plastic cases will work jut fine.

Or there is a soft case made by Boyt that is designed to take a bolt rifle with a big scope and a Harris bipod. The case is rectangular, ie it does not get smaller at the barrel end.

It has a full length ziper so you will not have to "pull" out the rifle possibly snagging the hammers on the inside of the soft case.

Rusty, I'm not familiar with these rifles but the more common 1 holed fron loader ones have a hook on the end of the breech for a quick dismount the barrel from the stock. I assumed this did also.
