Hey Todd: To clear up a cloudy situation, will you be my friend if I attack Shootaway? Remember, we are officers in the same club. Shootaway, I really don't understand you. A short time ago you posted you would follow my posts to learn about doubles, then you insulted both me and my fine 500. In the same thread you called all of us losers. Now you make a thread of your own asking about double rifle cases. Folks whom you insulted came here and offered sound and honest advise. Now you insult again. It must really suck to be you and live a lonely life with no friends. But, you make your own bed. And, you have found out most here are good men who are forgiving and let things pass. However, you keep digging your hole deeper and I have lost any sympathy for whatever your syndrome is, was, or may be. Again, Todd, please be my friend. D Don, they are smarter than you realize! The first two or three simply answered his question, as much for the lurker's benefit as for him. Todd, I digress, If you OBJECTIVELY look at my pictured rifle, What side is the cheek-piece on? It's only on the left if you're looking at it from the end with two big holes. Formerly "Nganga"

I just want to go back to the original question. The original purpose of the oak and leather cases was to protect the weapon and have all your tools to maintain it in one place. Yes they were what you used when traveling. I have seen some that look like they were dragged to and from the field. The better cases and some of the newer quality cases have a canvas outer cover to protect the case. Yes the cases were made to transport your fine weapon. However I would defer to using an americase or a Tuff pack today. Because of the increase in dangerous environments (conveyer belts un caring workers etc.) I don’t mean to imply that they didn’t have problems in the old days. I find the implied message that someone who had a fine weapon was usually someone who was traveling in first class and may have been able to keep his weapon close to him not chucked in the baggage car. Not being able to keep the gun with you in the cabin and having to hand it over to others is a major draw back. IMHO, an Americase is much more likely to survive than an Oak and Leather case. In addition, an Oak and leather case looks much more attractive than a metal case so maybe more attractive to thieves ? Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

If I owned a nice DR like that in a nice new Oak & leather case AND if I traveled with it, I am sure I would be crying my heart out at the airport when I collect my baggage! My stomach would be in a knot and I would be retching and sobbing! Why, oh why, did I not get a strong simple aluminium case & leave the leather case at home for display? I agree, The way your rifle is treated when it is out of sight will make you cry. I know of a member who had the stock on his rifle broken in a tough case. Go figure how bad they had to treat that one. After seeing Forklift dents from both wheels and the forks in cases (the guns survived !), Touch case or nothing now. I think the fact that guns tend to be put in cages now for security (well they are in Aus) and more controlled than they used to be helps but even so, we are a western country, I hate to think what some of the 3rd world are like ! You are correct Nganga! The Oak & Leather case is strictly for car travel to shootings where you are the only one who transports the rifle in the case. They were designed originally for steamship and train travel where the owner kept the cased rifle in his cabin, not in the hold. Today they are simply display cases and personal car travel. I worked for an Airline for 31 years, and flew all over North America with rifles in soft gun slips. In the old days we simply took our soft slipped rifles on board and they were placed in the cockpit with the Capt, flight engineer, and co pilot, and was handed back to us when we exited the plane at the final destination, or when we changed planes. Once when Brit air broke down in Newark, NJ and I took position of my rifles and walked down the street from the Brit air terminal to the American terminal to take American back to DAL Love field, changed planes to El Paso, Texas. Try that today! You wouldn't get passed the ticket counter with a gun case! The rules have changed my friends, and everything is under lock & key and handed over to folks who are sometimes less than careful or simply ignorant of the value of a fine double rifle! SO, in today's travel one must take measures to protect the very costly firearms they travel with, even if it weren't law! The fact remains today a fine fitted Oak & leather display case for a double rifle is not only nice to have, but increases the value of the rifle, and a separate case for air travel is not that expensive, so why not have both? ............................. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Interesting what you wrote, MAC, as it brought back a good memory of the 1960s returning from the east coast with a .30-30 I bought in Arizona--in a soft case and the stewardess placed it in the closet behind the pilot's seat. It was in a soft case and I was handed it as I got off the plane in Hartford. Yes, times have changed.
