Could anyone provide me with the C.I.P. specs for the .500/.416? I am specifically interested in the overall length of the loaded rounds. The only information that I can find is 3.98 inches but I am not sure that is the final spec. Does anyone have any loaded factory ammo that could tell me how long it is?

This is from International Big Bore Cartridge Load Data Collection by Pierre van der Walt.
500/416
Case trim length 3.2400"
Overall loaded Cart. length 3.9800"
Max Av Pressure 48,686 psi piezo
500/416 delivers and regulates around 2325-2350 fps with a 400-410 grain bullet from 24" barrels.
Hope this helps.

Terry:

Thanks, that OAL is just what I needed and confirms the information that I had from another article.

Boys....not meaning to start something here....BUT...if Dave says that at 3.98" OAL with a Woodie soft that the cannelure is BELOW the case mouth...3.98" is too damn short!! I have fired that rifle with the Woodie softs and solids crimped in the cannelure and they shoot great...at about 2330=/- fps.
So, not wanting to say someone CIP is BS....but I know what works, and seating to the cannelure depth is perfect.

Dave I always do the following when loading for my double rifle.

When setting up my dies, and each time I reload, I take 4 cases, and...

After resizing and trimming the cases, I wipe of all the lube, and with the barrels off the gun, I see if the cases are an easy fit into the barrels. Then...

I mount the barrels on the gun and see if the gun closes easily. By doing this I know if the cases AND the rims fit my rifle.

Then, when I seat the first 4 bullets I again try them in the barrels off the rifle and again with the barrels on the rifle. AS always do this las part in a place where if the rifle shoots you will not kill anybody or do "too" much proerty damage.

This lets me know that the rounds fit the chamber easily, ie the oal is not too long, and the crimp has not buldged the case, and that the primers are seated fully.

I try EVERY LOADED ROUND in my doubles in this manner before I take them on a hunting trip.

Also you will probably find that your 2 chambers are not excactly the same.

ALL ammo MUST fit Both barrels.

Just finished the article in I.B.B.C Load
Data Collection by P. van der Walt. He does state "The long neck actually obviates the need for crimping and since most bullets have their crimping grooves designed around the Rigby, it is not always possible to align case mouth and bullet groove on the 500/416." Just passing along the info.
