With the new Hornaday ammo in the 450/400 3" we should get someone like Chapuis to do a run of DRSS 450-400's. I'd be intrested if we could do somthing around 5,000- 7,500.

Called EVO and there 450-400 on a Chapuis is a bit over $10,000.

It is just hard for me to see the 150% price difference between a 9.3 and a 450-400. I could see a 50% to 75%.

All the Chapuis 9.3x74's I've looked at on the web have european game engraving on them and it looks "cheap", almost cartoonish to me. Can they be had with just plain English scroll or case colored?

From Dale, add about $240 for regulating to 100 yds/M(?) with scope mount option. Plus the $340 for mount and rings.

Not sure I understand this comment. Are you saying you either have to have the rifle regulated for a scope or without it? A rifle regulated for iron sights at 100 meters wouldnt be regulated properly if you added a scope?

If only iron sights, then they are regulated @ 50 yds/m. Got this info from Dale last night.

Now that Hornady is producing 450-400 ammo, what do you think the chances are Chapius will come out with this chambering? I know EVO markets their rifle in this caliber, just curious which would be the better way to go, rebored or new from factory? Would prefer to wait for Chapius, but if not then would go with EVO. Anyone have any pros or cons? EVO uses existing 375 barrels I believe to rebore.

Dennis, I ask the same question, and no response. I think it would be a great chambering. I just cant see the margin difference in a $4250 9.3 and a $10,000 450-400. Even at double, $ 8,500 I think it would have some intrest. I'm not going that way, and am going to prusue a different ave.

I just e-mailed Chapuis with the question that is burning everybody's tongue, "Will you make the Progress double rifle in 450/400?" Will keep you posted if they decide to reply. I asked to be the first one to take delivery. If they are keeping silent maybe they want to unveil it at a show like Reno or Rambouillet.

Are the scope mount/rings the quick detach style that will maintain a reasonable zero without resighting each time the scope is removed?
Is the scope mount option included in the base price? What would be total cost of options for the 100yd/M regulation, scope mount option, and mount and rings?

Thanks,
Jerry

did anyone think to check if the 450 base can fit onto the chapius action ?

and how much barrel wall thickness would be left if a 9,3 was rebored & rechambered to 450/400 ?

we don't offer 450/400 but do have 450, 470, and 500 chopperlump barrels that can be made ready to be fitted to your gun for under $3,000

Hmm, I have been wanting a double rifle for quite some time and keep my eye out at the Ft Worth Cabelas gun Lib for a used Merkel...this seems to be the way to go in terms of getting a new gun for less.

If one gets "in" on the buy, is it 50 down and 50 upon the rifles arrival at the FFL?

tomo577, I am wondering the same thing about the Chapuis actions. As you probably know, they make their "Artisan" series of doubles in the stock calibers of 300 WinMag, .375 H&H, and only two big ones as standard calibers, the 416 Rigby and the .470 NE. But most of these guns are made on an order basis, not as standard production guns like the Progress series. But who knows, if someone said he could sell twenty of them in the USA maybe they would gear up.

SBT

The ones that You dislike

Chapuis sons displaying a fine 470 double

African doubles

And if You don't like all of those doubles, there is the Cousin, Pierre Chapuis (Pierre artidan TM) who is taylormaking doubles but only up to the 9.3-74R calibre.

SOME QUICK COMMENTS

IF "EVO" IS EVOLUTION RIFLE CO - THEY USE SEARCY ACTIONS FOR ALL THEIR LARGE CALIBERS.

CHAPIUS BUY - I BELIEVE IT IS 30% DOWN WITH ORDER PLUS ALL ADDITIONAL EXTRAS TO BE PAID WITH ORDER PLACEMENT.

HEYM WILL PROBABLY MAKE YOUR BELOVED 450/400

CONTACT NEW GUY FOR A QUOTE. OR THE FACTORY DIRECTLY. MANY TALK ABOUT THIS OLD OBSOLETE CALIBER BUT DAMN FEW ARE -REALLY - BUYING IT !

CHAPIUS PROGRESS SERIES RIFLES SEEM TO MAX OUT AT 9,3. I SUSPECT THAT IS THE MAXIMUM CAL THAT ACTION SIZE WILL HANDLE. OTHERWISE THEY COULD SELL ALOT OF HOLLANDS 375 - BOTH FLANGED AND BELTED AT THE KIND OF PRICES THEY HAVE !!

NOW THERE WOULD BE A SUPER CALIBER THAT WOULD PUT TO BED THE 450/400. SCOPED IT DOES ALL THE SMALL STUFF AND SCOPE OFF THE CLAW MOUNTS AND YOU ARE READY FOR THE BIG BOYS. AND YOU CAN BUY AMMO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD

Chapuis has 3 SxS double rifle actions.
One up to 9,3, another for the 375, I think the 300 Win Mag is on the 375 action, Evolution has the 450/400 3" made on the 375 action, I have handled one, very slick, and the 470 action.

The 470 action is large enough to take extra bbls in 12 guage, the others can be had with 20ga bbls.

I got a reply today from Vincent Chapuis (to the e-mail I mention up above on this thread). They plan to add the .375 H&H Flanged and the .500 NE to their standard production guns. At this point they will not be adding the 450/400 on standard production guns.

Dennis,

No commitment on the time frame for availability of the two new calibers in their line-up. They just say they are working on those two and invite me to discuss it with them at the Rambouillet hunting fair (in April!)

Re Scopes and Doubles

Doubles are especially sensitive to barrel harmonics and adding a scope risks to upset the harmonics and throw bullets all over the paper at hunting distances. I scoped my Gibbs-made .350 Rigby No. 2 just after buying it many years ago, using warne QD rings and a Leupold compact 4x. Both rings went in front of the turret on a Warne rail screwed into the rib. It shot wonderfully at 100 yds with either the scope or with iron sights. Tried to upgrade a few years ago with a Leupold 1.75-5x. That scope was long enough to put a ring on either side of the turret. Left barrel started printing 10 inches off to the left of point of aim at 100 yds. Clearly I'd changed barrel harmonics.

Moral here is check with your gunmaker and ask to see target with the scope attached and without the scope.
Regards, Tim
