I'm ordering a Chapuis UGEX from Champlin's in Enid Oklahoma.

I work in Saudi Arabia. I'm from Texas and take my repatriation leave there every year. My next leave is the month of December. Most of my family is in the Houston area or in Tyler.

I need to find someone in the areas of Houston or Tyler who can measure me for a stock so I can give the measurements to J.J. at Champlin's.

If any of you know somewhere I can get this done, please give me the contact information. J.J. said that if I can find someone who can measure me for a shotgun stock that should be close enough.

Dustin is a great gunsmith. In case he doesn't do measurements, Larry Fehland in Houston does. A friend has gotten his meaurements done for shotgun with Larry. Don't have his contact number.

Thanks Bob,

I plan to call Dustin in the morning. But just in case he doesn't provide stock measurement services, I'm hoping someone here can send me contact information/phone number for Larry Fehland.

Thanks Bob,

Unfortunately I work in Saudi and thanks to the Saudi Govt controlling all internet servers in the Kingdom, whenever I try the URL you listed I get this:

Blocked
Reason:
The Websense category "Weapons" is filtered.

Can you give me Feland's phone number? I've got an internet phone with an 832- number so calling Houston from here is a "local" call for me.

Thanks Bob,

I plugged he info you gave me into www.theultimates.com white pages and think I found him up in Cypress Texas:

Heard great things about Dustin, but a side trip to Champlins is definitely worth the trip. Enid's not that far and Champlins is right on the airport grounds.

If I could fly, as you suggest, I'd do it. However, the last commercial service to Enid ended some time ago.

By car, after flying first to Oklahoma City, makes it a rough trip to pull off on my very limited schedule.

Not being crital, just curious, what brought you

to choose CHAPUIS over DEMAS, HEYM and the rest

that can be bought new for under 20K? [some

vintage U.K. made rifles too]

Good question Jack,

I have never owned or shot a double rifle. So even considering a vintage double makes no sense. A beginner in any endeavor should start with a new instrument before dabbling in a collector's market he has no background in.

I work overseas 11 months a year and have little opportunity to check out or test alternatives. I've never even seen a picture of a Demas or read any reviews by owners and have no clue what they cost compared to a Chapuis UGEX.

From lurking on this board and others for over a year as well as reading a few books, what I have to go on is reputation and second hand observations. From those there seems to be wide agreement that the Chapuis is a very good gun at a very attractive price and that if you have problems with Chapuis in France on a warrantee issue, Champlin's will take care of you anyway. The Heym seems to be the undisputed best of the entry level guns and I've never heard anything but good things about Chris Sells. But it is considerably more costly than the Chapuis - almost double. A beginner is likewise better off starting with a new Toyota before buying a Porsche.

If, after owning, shooting, and hunting with the 9.3 UGEX, I decide I like doubles rifles as much as I think I will, I will likely get a 450/400 3" next. At that point I may pony up for a Heym. Particularly since Chapuis still does not offer this caliber, though I understand Champlin Arms is pressuring them to do so.

I'll be working in Saudi about 5 or 6 more years and will likely be populating my retirement battery with new or recently manufactured guns only. After I retire and get to meet and shoot with some of you and attend events like the Safari Club shows, then I may get to learn enough to make buying a vintage gun a sane choice.
