Baised on my own personal use, I consider the 9,3x74R double rifle to be one of the best hunting rifles on the Planet...

Just curious, what do you think will be the overall cost of your 9,3 Project?

Overall cost? Action: $100, barrels, $250. Stock blank; $100. Bluing; $100. My labor: priceless therapy. I already had the reamer, rib material, recoil pad. I like the 9.3 as well, for hog and bear hunting. Killed one bear with a 9.3 double I used to own. I also have a Chapuis on order. I just like to build them. Oh, I am going to have the dog and rabbit on the action changed to wild boars by an engraver. That is the plan anyway.

Midway. They now list them as "out of stock; no backorder". Probably due to low demand. I should have bought more of them last year.

I'm envious, to say the least. Do keep us posted with progress photos.

Wish I could find some reasonably priced CM or SS barrels to build a 450/400.

Wow!! $100 for the stock blank. It looks to me to have quite a bit of character in it. I'm anxious to see it stained.

I like the 9.3 as well. I have my first one now and am looking forward to taking it to Africa this year for plains game and back up to my DG DR.

No thanks. Not meaning to hijack the OPs thread. The 9.3x74R was a caliber that I had considered for a DR. However, given that I'd like to anchor a cape buff at some point down the road, and that 9.3 is not legal (I didn't say lethal) medicine in some countries, I shifted my focus toward the 450/400. Were it not for that, I'd have, be looking ofr or building a 9.3x74R.

Again, I am envious of the OP and look forward to progress photos.

I've often considered a post-war J.P Sauer shotgun as the basis for a DR. They have the Greener cross-bolt and a double bite.

Todd, isn't the grain running the wrong way through the wrist area, or am I seeing something else?

The grain is not running the optimal way, but it is only a 9.3; you definitely would not use this stock for a hard kicking caliber. I used the blank for the nice grain pattern. It's got a through bolt and the grip is very large and it is a heavy dense blank so it is not going to break. Todd, you can answer his question but I have the stock here.

The 9.3X74R is one of my favorite double rifle chamberings! I have a couple of doubles so chambered. Untill a few years ago that chambering was the most ignored double rifle cartridge in the USA. It is now a member of about everyone's double rifle battery in the USA today. It has always been a favorite in Europe. Good choice for your project! I'm looking forward to seeing the finshed rifle!

In general, what contour seems to work best with the shotgun to DR conversions?

Maybe none that you can buy; they will all be too heavy; you have to contour them to get the proper weight distribution. I can give you dimensions for this 9.3 if you want; the breech will be determined by the monoblock you are using and the muzzles will be determined by caliber; you can match a DR already built. I can give you the dimensions of my K 450-400 muzzles, then you can contour so you get the weight you want. It's not an exact science. More like cooking without recipes.

Very Nicely done! I will be checking back to see how you are doing on this project. I like your choice of caliber, it will serve you well, I'm sure. I would love to build one in this caliber but have not been able to find barrels to do the job. I have a Biakal over and under in 30/06 that I like for deer hunting alot. If your gun is like mine, you will want to smooth up the trigger pulls, they were terrible on my gun till I polished off all the burrs. Bob

I am concentrating on another vice; rebuilding a WW2 jeep, which is taking all my gun building time so I have not touched this one lately; I still have several others to shoot. I will resume later in the year. The triggers on the older (made in 1958) Baikals are not terrible.

Cool; I rode and drove a million miles in 151s. I am still not sure why we adopted them over the original MB/GPW design. But this is a discussion for another forum; good double rifle shooting anyway!

No problem, that's what life is all about, getting distracted by your passions. Hopefully we can get you interested in your DR project again soon.

Can I ask how you plan on joining the barrels?

I've seen different methods used in these projects over the years ranging from tig welding the middle wedge to using solder with different melting points for the front and centre wedges and monoblock joint. I've been curious as to how one stops the solder in the rest of the assembly melting when you are trying to move the adjustment wedges during the regulation process.

Finished the GPW; back on building DRs. I will solder the middle and front wedges. I soldered the rear of the rib onto the monoblock and will weld the lug on the rib to the barrels. That lug will become the forend lug. The heat from moving the front wedge during regulation does not affect anything else; tin solder with 5%s silver melts at really low temp. The only solder in the monoblock is for little rings to take up the space where the shotgun rim recess was. I put ribs on last and don't solder them to the barrels; they are soldered to each other on lugs between the barrels. Easier for me that way.

Whenever I see someone who has the skill and know-how to do something like this I always feel that I have wasted my life by choosing the wrong profession.

Looking forward to more pictures and of course a report on how the final product shoots.

I have not worked on it lately; I go from project to project and this one is now on the back of the bench. I will post when I finish it. When I was shooting it for regulation, I had it within 4 inches at 50 yards, and one more wedge adjustment should get it within 2 inches. or less. And I turned this stock into a duplicating pattern.

dpcd,

I would like to see more progress photos of this project. I think you'll find alot of interest in it.

There's also a forum on www.nitroexpress.com on Building Double Rifles and I know the "viewers" would like to see it posted there.

There are projects such as yours posted there including 9.3 x 74s and a .600 being built from scratch.

Great project. Keep up the good work. Please post more photos.......It might inspire the rest of us to finish our projects and share them.

Interesting mount you set up there, should work well. There is one serious deficiency on that unit---no mud!!!!!

I didn't "set up" the mount; that is the way they came from the factory. WW2 Jeeps (the term was not used officially until 1943 when Willys trademarked it) never had doors. I will never drive this vehicle in the mud. I have Power Wagons for that. Malek, come on up and you can drive it.

Nice jeep. I noticed your Baikal 45-70 has some mods done to it.Do you have any photos of the mods and can you explain what you did? I am in the middle of doing some mods to mine. I removed the jack screw and front sight barrel retainer. I am in the process of regulating the barrels.
