I would like to know if there anyone that hunted with the model221? if so which caliber do they used to hunt? And what do they hunt?The reason is i am looking to buy one for Deer and maybe Hog hunting and i would like to know if iam wasting my money? I has heard that in the part of the country dealer say they are junk.But i can't find one to but,so if anyone know where there one for would the PM me thank you.

I have both the over and under and side by side Baikal's in 30-06. I haven't hunted with the side by side yet, but one hog went down to the over and under. Shoots well for the $279.00 that I paid for it.

i have 1 in 30-06 and another in 45-70... other than terrible triggers, they are good for the $$$... ive shot several feral hogs from 60 lbs to 200 lbs with the 45-70, all 1 shot kills, they ran but left a blood trail that was easy to follow... scoped the 30-06 and have hunted with it, just haven't bloodied it yet...

I've got one of the Remington (Bikal) 221's in 45-70. Great fun to shoot. I bought it about 3 years ago. I had a gunsmith go through the triggers and clean them up and also redo the cocking springs so it would stay fully open if I I wanted it that way but it would also hold the half-closed position once loaded.

I mounted a Nikon 1-4x20 in a 22 cal rimfire base. It took awhile to get it regulated to the load I wanted - Rem 405's at 1600fps. Had it all dialed in for 100 yds and took it on this years trip to Namibia for plains game.

Not sure what happened to it on the way but the first day doing the zero checks at the PH's range the regulation went to hell - wouldn't put either barrel on a typing paper size target even at 50yds -crossing - with either of us shooting it. Ended up just putting it back in the case. Sill haven't taken it back to the range to sort out what happened - couldn't find any marks on the rifle or the case that would indicate impact or damage during transport. All I know is it was dead on the last day at the range before we left - both barrels into a 2" circle at 100yds. 2 MOA - granted not much to brag about if it was a 7x57 or any bolt gun but for an inexpensive big bore not bad at all.

Still is fun as hell to shoot and with that load it would be very good on any plans game under 150yds.

Bought my .45/70 a little over 3 years ago also and it was a big problem. Barrels would not open enough to load without holding them open (difficult to load with only two hands). The triggers had 1/4" sear engagement and were extremely heavy.
Have worked on it myself using help from the internet. Also, had my gunsmith work on the triggers. Results? An absolute fun gun that my buddies want to borrow when we go down to Texas piggy hunting. DRT using Barnes 300gr SOCOM blue-tipped bullets and 350gr hard-cast bullets.

That having to hold it open to reload was was a real pain - nearly needed three hands. I figured out that once "cocked", I could hold the butt tight between my trigger arm and body and pull down on the barrels with my forward hand and use my trigger hand to put in two more rounds - slow and cumbersome.

Only reason I could think of as to "why" it was like that and then go back to a half open - half closed position was for some sort of safe method of carrying it "open" without the rounds falling out of the chamber. Called Remington and they said they were all like that but the guy didn't know why.

Not real sure what my gunsmith did to mine but when it was done I could open/cock and the barrels will now stay fully open by themselves. It will also hold the "half open" position too but I've never actually carried it this way.

Guess I'll have to get it back out this winter and sort out what happened and try to take it back to Namibia again on next years trip.

It is fun as hell to shoot....and inexpensive fun to boot!

Would you let me know who the gunsmith is that worked on them. My smith won't work on mine and it would be much more fun to shoot if I didn't have to struggle pulling the trigger.

My gunsmith said, "No more." I did a lot of the work on mine, including allowing the rifle to hold fully open. There are sites on the web that will give you the full particulars.

My smith did the triggers on mine for about $100. He admitted they came out a little to light and am guessing they are about 2-2.5 pounds. But so far they have never doubled. Break like a piece of thin glass. He also disabled the auto safety at the same time.

Rifle looks like a piece of shit and is crudely built but it is the most accurate double rifle I own. Keep on wondering when I will have problems with it but so far so good. It wears an Ultradot sight on it. Tried a 1x4 Nikon but it messed up the regulation and accuracy so removed it.
