Mike, I'll have to dose as required! All this 600NE talk is getting to me. I was perfectly content with looking for a nice 577, but Paul's pix above of that 600 are making me crazy (or in my case, crazier!!!)

CCM Doc, Thanks for the invite to a shooting fest! I am not remembering the connection to Ellenville, NY. Can you refresh my memory? That's way, way up above Bieb's property. Jack OH GOD! {Seriously, we need the help.}

Hi Gents: I think the question of barrel length must be tied to the thickness and weight of the barrels. The Verney-Caron .600s have thick barrels and 24" would seem right. Barrels a bit thinner would look fine and balance well at 26". I don't think anything longer would do well in a large caliber. I must say the Jeffery 24" .600s I have shouldered seemed to come up quicker than my 26" Wilkes. Whatever the opinion may be, if you want a .600 and an original vintage rifle at that, buy it asap as they don't come up often and what may seem like a high price today will be good tomorrow and a steal the day after that. I have never had a second thought about buying my Wilkes and now have my eye on a Jeffery. I've got a bunch of doubles for sale but the .600 is staying! It comes down to personal taste. However, the 600NE is normally used at fairly close range, so my choice would be for the shorter 24" length.

Well, I picked them up today (along with a Mossberg SuperBantam 20 gauge combo): a Verney-Carron 600 Nitro Express with 24" barrels and Chapuis UGEX color case hardened 9.3x74. Whitetails of the Allegheny Mountains beware! Cape buffalo on my next safari will be the subject of twin-barrel .620 fodder. Thanks for all the advice and comments. Dave, I'll let you know when I am heading over to Ken's. Hopefully he'll have a stable of toys to heft and shoulder while there. On the way back, we'll all have to stop at Griffin & Howe. Good thing they have drool rags at the door. The great thing to take from a visit with Ken's pile of VC guns and rifles is the wide palette of options, style features, and configuration you can incorporate into an order of a new VC. Also you'll get a sense of what the quality standard os across the board Great Stuff!! Cheers Tinker _________________________________ Self appointed Colonel, DRSS
