Barrel length on 600 NE

DR Afficionados,
Assuming similar balance point and all else being equal, what say you:

23.5" (24) or 25.5"(26)?

I would think a little extra barrel length is a good idea, given some of the low velocities I've seen reported for .600 NE ammo.

Paul,

For a double rifle 24" max. Make the tubes it .800" at the muzzle and 14-1/4 pounds.
You can get all the velocity needed in 24" tubes.

The difference in velocity between the two is not worth mentioning. I would make the choice depending on how they balance overall with the rifle. With which does the rifle blance better?

I'd go with 24's looked good on most of the Jefferys, and a snap action underlever would be cool too.

I like this thinking. But also, if a guy is about 6'0" or bit taller

he might well put the 26" bbls to good use. I'm 6'2" and my 28"

bbls don't seem ungainly to me at all.

As one who has used the .600 both barrel lengths and not just talked about it, I go with the 26" the 24" Jeffrey underlever kicked a lot worse and had a lot more barrel rise than the Holland 26". Yes, the Jeff could have be restocked to fit better and that might have helped, but you don't mess with those old original heirlooms. Yes, but 2" in the jess I would never notice it. the Jeff was a hair lighter. I didn't like the balance of the light weight tubes on the Jeff.

Just my experience.

Jack, I'm just a bit shorter than you - at 5'5" so even your 450-400 might be ungainley on me. Of course, I never had a problem with my 26" or 28" barreled WBYs, so ... we'll see ...

I am with SAfrican hunter.

I prefer at least 26" barrels on a big bore [over 400] double.

I thought the Jeffery 600 I handled felt "stubby".

My 450 No2 has 28" barrels, and I would not want them any ashorter, the double handles perfectly.

Well, I shouldered and swung a few 600 Nitro doubles this morning - a 23.5" and two 24". Felt great and pointed naturally.

Before actually having these in my hands, I was pretty sure that I wanted 26" barrels. I was very pleased with teh way the 24" felt in my hands.

Again thanks for the opinions (five of you said 26" four said 24")

At the risk of incurring BigFiveJack's wrath if I decide on going with something else in the future

chrono readings are. The reloading details will draw my full

attention too. Can you please remind me of the weight? The 9.3

MM rifle looks to have a clearly longer LOP. Is that correct?

Thanks Jack - reloading data and 35P chrono results in the near future.

I think you, Biebs and I should take a ride to just north of Ellenville, NY this summer with toys in tow. I'll bring the skeet thrower and the Beretta Xplor A400 along with the doubles and 600 OK. You bring the icepaks and slings. Biebs can bring some deadly charging mellons for targets.
