I have a Heym O/U double rifle in 375 H&H what would be a good hunting load for American Bison?

Hunt'em like they were originally hunted. BPCR with iron sights and a set of shooting sticks. What's the challenge of using a modern rifle? "This ain't Dodge City and you ain't Bill Hickok. "

A Bison hunt with a DR is cool! It's one of the only game animals in the states where you can hunt with a double and not feel a bit out of place, cuz there's plenty of others out there with 30" 45-70s, 50-110s, or one kind smokepole or another. With the 375 H&H, pretty much any commercial 300gr load would be fine...Trophy Bonded, Swift A-Frame, Barnes TSX. If you stick with open sights, it will up the ante on an exciting hunt. Good luck!

Mag Slim the chalenge is hunting him on foot with a double rifle! rnb I would use the Federal Premium Safari with 300 gr Nosler partitions if you want to use factory. If I were going to use handloads I would use Nosler partitions with 76 grs IMR 4831, and Rem 9 1/2 (mag)primer, for 2400-2450 fps That is not a max load but a middle of the road load, but fills the case to 96%, if it will regulate well in your double. I think a little experiment up or down by a gr of powder will get you regulation in your rifle. That load works in my bolt rifle very well, and it is not too hot for a double rifle. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

If you want a challenge, then take a .58 Hawken with round balls and 150 grs FF powder. And oh yeah, hunt one that isn't eating a bag of corn that was just dumped on the ground. "This ain't Dodge City and you ain't Bill Hickok. "

There is a good answer-- unless you just want to "cook-up" your own. I have not found them difficult to kill (only 3 so far) Any good .375 at 100 to 200 yds should do. I particularly like the Swift A-Frames, but, again, any good modern 375 H&H load should work. DuggaBoye-O NRA-Life Whittington-Life TSRA-Life DRSS DSC HSC SCI

I took a bison in 2009 with my 375 CZ, 270 gr TSX @ 2500 fps (rather mild). Pretty much a bang-flop, as a few here on AR predicted. I wouldn't hesitate to take your double, if you have the chance. You may get a bang flop on a bison with a 375, and then again, you may not. A Namibian PH of my acquaintance related to me that he had always wanted to shoot a bison, and one of his clients here in Montana arranged for him to do just that. The PH told me he shot the animal 6 times with a 458 Win before he put it down. He was shocked to say the least, as he was hitting it well. It just didn't go down easily. I think I would put a couple of extra cartridges in my pocket, just in case.

I'm going to use a DR for bison this Sept, either a 10-bore 700gn lyman#2 ball at 1300fps or a pure lead 8 conical 1350@1400fps (overkill, but shoots to sights). I'll post the results good or bad when done. I think the 10 would be perfect and it shoots 2" groups at 50yds, but the 8 is more fun. This will be my first bison and I'm very fired up, to say the least! RNB, please let us know how it goes. I think a 375 would be excellent bison medicine. Bolt actions and single shots will fade away as did disco, the hula hoop, and bell-bottomed pants. Doubles will rule the world!"

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I have hunted and shot a bison with a 375 H&H magnum. Remington safari grade factory ammunition was used containing 300 grain Swift A-Frames. You need to know that as long as an animal is still standing, I keep shooting; even if the shots already fired will eventually be fatal. The distance was about 50 yards. The first shot broke both shoulders, expanded to 1.009 inches, and retained weight was 230 grains (77%). The second shot went through both lungs, expanded to .830 inches, and reatined weight was 262 grains (87%). The thire shot was at a quartering away angle. The bison was hit just behind the left shoulder and the bullet went diagonally through the chest cavity and into his neck, but it was not recovered. From the time of the first shot to the last, the bison traveled about 10 yards. I hope that this helps.

How does a bison travel 10 yards with two broken front shoulders? Not possible! 465H&H

I have shot bison with .375 A frames and with Woodleigh 400 grain in a 450/400 3" with iron sights. The idea is to shoot them in the ear. If you do that just about any good bullet will work. ALLEN W.
