Most people when recommending loads for a double 470NE state they use Federal 215 primers. I can't find any locally and have been using CCI magnum LR primers. Do the Federals make enough of a difference to worry about, and cease my loading till I can get some? I've used them in other cartridges in the past and have not noticed a significant change with them, but I wasn't burning 100+ gr. of powder either.

Ted,

I very recently did some "due diligence" on primers as I start to work up a load that regulates in my newly purchased .303 British double. The essence of the best article I read is that Fed215 and CCI250 are about the same, with negligible pressure differences between them. The Remington primers are the mildest. The Winchester primers are the hottest with major pressure increases. Please note that this is all second hand, I have not done the actual shooting with various primers myself.

I use both Federal 215 and CCI 250 and have not noticed a difference.

Regards, Tim

I use Fed. 215's because Federal wont let us have any of the 216s they use for their factory double rifle cartridges...I wouldn't use any other primer...Shop around and find some 215s.

It has been difficult to get 215s for a while, but the spigot is open again and they're starting to show up.

Winchester primers are all that reliably work in rounds like the 30-378 at low temperatures. I have used both Federal and CCI's, and the Federal's were not worth the effort of obtaining in Africa!
