AtkinsonIMO, killing an elepant is a properly placed solid with anything from a 375 on up, and placing that bullet correctly is pretty easy at under 25 yards and usually less. I've mostly aways used a 450-400 and never felt the need for more, although I used a wonderfully accurate Searcy .470 for a couple of years and found it to be as good...
Recoil should be the determining factor for each of us, it seems to me so few actually know their recoil limits and the old adage that one never feels recoil while shooting at game is oh so true, but if you flinch on a target you will flinch on the shot you didn't feel on game! end of that story..a flinch is a flinch!
I believe a PH should be carrying a 470 or more if he can handle it, I have seen some that carried big doubles that couldn't handle the recoil..Always a good idea when you go shoot in, to ask the PH to do the same in a polite way. Can't hurt a thing.

And most will tell you their ammo is too expensive.

I bet it does. It's at my Smith's he is going to polish out some of the stock surface scratches. Should look pretty skippy when done.

surefire7I didn't know my Ipad had text/photo/voice conversion recognition capability.
I could SWEAR that I heard a tiny metalic voice cry, "Take me hunting again..."
