I was just wondering if heat is still used to join CL barrels and if so how much of it and where?
|

No that's the beauty about CL barrels. The makers can use an epoxy to join them so the heat can't damage the barrels. Mac

…………………………………………...................................................... They are fluxed, wired together and silver soldered or brazed in an electric heating coil for precise temperature control! Well of course...the barrels are joined together at the breach using hard solder/braze flowing at 900+ as is the forend loop(sometimes). Ribs are still at 450 degrees. Everything is the same. The real benefit of CL barrels is the ability to get things smaller than a monoblock will allow at the breach if the maker wants to push it. Because of this the action can also be shaped down more. Of course you also dont have any seams. Are there performance gains? Only in handling if the benefits if CL are utilized. Shoe lumping can achieve the same thing. http://www.facebook.com/profil...p?id=100001646464847 A.M. Little Bespoke Gunmakers LLC 682-554-0044 Michael08TDK@yahoo.com

Here is a picture of a Heym barrel set which is a shoelump barrels set before it is carded so you can see the brass but the joining is the same for Chopper lump barrels. As Aaron says there is no epoxy used. The only double rifle I know of that used glue for joining barrels was the now defunct Rogue River doubles that used the glue used to hold the heat tiles on the space shuttle. That didn't turn out well because it negated the trial and error method of regulating the barrels. That system was dropped and they started making the California Rigbeys which are now defunct as well. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Don't laugh; I started out actually using hose clamps for regulation. (true) I now use Elmers, the yellow stuff, to hold barrels together, exclusively for chopper lumps;; it does not need heat.

No doubt about it, that yellow Elmer's is the bomb. Mike

DO NOT use white Elmer's; that crap is made for first graders art projects. Use only the yellow stuff in the plastic bottle.

I believe the yellow glue was named after Elmer Keith? Made from Bald Eagle beaks IIRC.

Elmers is overkill....

No, I like the liquid: I want it liberally running out of the joint so as to make sure I have complete coverage over everything in sight.

Some of your "best quality" bespoke guns do use heat, since the barrels are forged together. A dying art. Mike

On my WR they used DoubleBubble. JJ had to reregulate last year and he applied Red Loctite. So far so good. Dutch

You see, thats the difference between a Bermingham maker and a real gun maker. A London maker wouldn't go for that pre-made store bought crap. http://www.facebook.com/profil...p?id=100001646464847 A.M. Little Bespoke Gunmakers LLC 682-554-0044 Michael08TDK@yahoo.com

Gun makers or gum makers? I am surprised no one has mentioned duct tape. I was talking to a leading London double rifle maker who said if a double rifle cannot be regulated with duct tape, it just cannot be done. Mike

And if the duct tape fails to produce the desired results, one can always fall back on this:

Gents: A question about the finest London makers only about the glue, duct tape, Dremel tool, etc., shown above. Are they bought from vendors or are they made in house?
