Can anyone point me in the right direction for some .500/.465 dies and suggest some tried and tested smokeless loads? There are a few on Midway, but it seems they are all special order with 90-100 days + for restocking. Thanks, Joe.

Express: Google CH Tool, call, and ask for Dave Davidson. Should have them in stock. Load? 105 grains of IMR 4831 and the 480-grain bullet should work. Give or take a few grains for proper regulation and pressure. I would suggest you contact RCBS for your dies. They offer a first class product. In my 1952 vintage 465 Royal the chambers didn't match up with the RCBS dies so they custom fit the dies based on fired cases and did so for no extra charge. My gun regulated and shot great with 87.5grs of R-15 and Woodleighs. Good luck!

Thanks guys. CH tool have the dies, I am waiting on Bertram for a reply on brass and Woodleigh for the bullets. No filler required in these loads? We have a limited choce of powders here in Italy, will chosing the closest powder from a burn rate chart do, or must I use the exact same powders? I am kinda terrfied at the idea of running smokeles loads through a 100 year old rifle...

Exact same powders as ??????? You can use a variety of powders, like I use ADI 2209 or 2213 - not sure what the US equivalent. What powders can you get in Italy ?

All the Vihta Vuori range, just a hew Hodgdons and very few IMRs no ADI or ARs. I frequently use the burn rate chart to substitute for my other rifles but this is something I want to take the most possible care of rather than compromise the gun.

ADI powders in the US are sold as what ? Hodgdons or IMR ? Might be worth flicking a quick email to Graeme Wright. I might also call a 465 owner here (apart from me) to see what he loads. I'd go RCBS with dies - I think CH4D are crap / wrong dimensions but maybe the 2 I bought was just a bad lot but 500/450 was a standard chambering so can't see how they got it wrong. .

I have already ordered the CH4D dies, and if you get what you pay for they might be crap, at nearly half the price of th competition but I'm happy to give them a try.

No problems. Re the other question, which powder is ADI in the US ? Hodgdons or IMR ?

You would have found that had you ordered those dies from Huntington Die Specialties, being a special-order item, your wait would have been 3 to 5 MONTHS.

Well CH4D is sending them out tomorrow! I have never hear of the CH4D dies being poor in quality, maybe 500N got a bad one.

Express: I have a dozen sets of CH dies from standard nitro express calibers to custom 8-7-and 4-bore. They also made my bullet sizing dies and shell holders. No doubt RCBS makes excellent products but the wait is long and my CH items are of like quality. AND, you can call and talk to the owner anytime--you can't do that with RCBS. I use a small tuft of pillow stuffing in my nitro loads. Your rifle was made for smokeless so I don't see a problem. Just check bore size to match your bullet's diameter. Come to Alaska and shoot with us or take a bear with your pride and joy. They are meant to be used! I'm with Cal on this one. I have a set of CH4D dies in .577-450 that are very nice indeed. My two die set for my .450 #2 NE is RCBS but my trim die is a CH4D. I see no difference in quality or finish at all. RCBS IS top quality, but the wait time for their special order dies is ludicrous. I'll give you another example. Two weeks ago I phoned Shilen to order two chrome-moly barrels in calibre 9.3 x 74R. Their price was over $450 per barrel with a wait time of over 25 weeks. I said no thank you, hung up and phoned McGowen. I was treated with great courtesy, price quoted is $165 per barrel, with a delivery time of 4 to 6 weeks. Some of the services, like hand-lapping, which are extra charges at Shilen, are standard services at McGowen with no extra charges. Some of these companies may have gotten a little"too big for their britches"!!
