Hello Everyone just got back from my first Africa Safari and had a ball so well have to go back and want a elephant hunt, so while I figure out who to go with (another post to come) thought I be brave and step in to the lion den to ask your help on which one A little info about me, just a florida redneck who loves to hunt and shoot anything, I also am a avid reloader (how I first found you guys) and like big stuff and tweak my own guns. Plus i can fix the plane if we break down in the bush lol. I really did that in New Used a 375 H&H in Rem 700 customized by me with stock, trigger etc & 280AI with same treatment, well if had a douglass airx barrel for plains. I know it is the wrong action for some for a DG gun but I survived. lol SO while I wait and see if who lets talk about what to use, I went to Dupont/K guns in Vero Beach yesterday and held a pretty sweet 470 Classic with upgraded wood and little art work (cape & lion) that really seem to fit nice, will have to add a little to the stock (differant pad), dang long arms. I have read a ton about the decocking lever but seem to work good and easy for me and I liked the way if you open it and leave it in the foward psotion slam to new round in and it is ready to go. (Looked at a blauser hmmm) SO that did not bother me at all. These guns have are new 2008 and will deal a little on price so in the way 13,000 range what other one do you like that has kind fit as a K gun. Love to have a old rigby but I need the $$ to pay for the hunt as well, I only repair Jets & Helio not own them. I may add a doc sight being 56 the old eyes are not what they used to be, I did really like the new Leupold 1.5 X 4 VXR that I put on the 375 so may look into something like that so I can have it off for close up work. Recoil is not a big issue, I do not want a 600 but seems that the 470 is a good one and reloading for the K gun should be ok? But like the 500 as well. So what is the felt recoil between the two like So thanks for the help and great site, been lurking around reading your post for years and thought it was time to step in and say hello Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 Patron NRA SCI

There are a number of other decent, affordable double rifles out there: Searcy, Merkel, Heym, Verney Carron, Chapuis, etc. I have a Searcy 450-400 and a Merkel .470 and like them both. They have both performed admirably in Africa. My next double is a Searcy .375 H&H Flanged screw grip double rifle that should be ready sometime in September.

Between the .470 and .500, so long as you are shooting a rifle that fits you, I find the marginal increase in recoil is more than offset by the gain in stopping power. In other words, yes, the .500 may recoil a little more but for that little difference in recoil you get a big step up in impact on game. The .500 just clobbers stuff. And since you reload you can load RL15 in your .500 and that will help with recoil too. Go with the .500 and do not look back. Mike

MJines, that is great tip, I was looking in some of my reloading books and seems to be for 6 grains more of Rl 15 got almost 1000 ft lbs of energy at 50 yards but books are books so I like hearing from the guys who put the metal thru the meat Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 Patron NRA SCI

You have been smitten! As long as you can find the models to "try on" for fit, there are lots of doubles available on-line, or from members here. Don't rush it...good deals come up in time. +2 for the 500 NE....if you're going to do it, do it right :-)

Welcome to the forum. If you can wait till January, come to the Dallas safari club show in Dallas. There will be people representing most of the makers you might be interested in and several that handle used rifles. This way you can try several back to back and if you decide to by have your measurements taken on the spot. That is really the benefit of buying new, getting it your way. Talked with the Heym man, so too cool looks like we have to go to Texas, he has one of about all of brands to try. SO what are your thoughts on Heym, I like the custom fit & no cocking lever?? But pretty is as pretty does how do they shoot is the main game Rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 Patron NRA SCI

Fit of the stock to your dimensions is very important. I would go with whoever offers that service, then you are miles ahead of the game. Just my 2 cents: Dutch

Anyone got an opinion on choice between K 500/.416 and K .416? Will mainly be a backup gun in a DG area but with lots of plainsgame hunting? Any advice appreciated.

I assume you mean the 500/416 vs the 416 Rigby in a Krieghoff double rifle? The ballistics will be quite similar, as the concept of the 500/416 was to duplicate those of the 416 Rigby, but in a flanged cartridge made for a break-action gun. Many double rifles are out there chambered in non-rimmed cartridges, like 458 WM, 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, 300 WM, 30-06, etc, but some double-rifle guys wouldn't think of putting a rimless caliber in a DR. Not sure that it matters much in "real life". :-)

X4 for the .500 NE...it is the perfect DR cartridge and R-15 makes it really perfect...especially behind a CEB BBW #13 solid ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ J. I would try to shoot as many different doubles in some different calibres, that you can. It is worth a "road trip/plane trip" to shoot some different guns. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Thanks for input, had a bit of finger trouble, choosing between the 500/.416 and the .470. My only reasoning on the .416 would be that I do a lot of plains game in a DG area and while my .375 does well I want to use a double that will be most versatile for all situations. Big ask I know, especilly being left handed. Has anyone tried a 2 barrel set on a K? Hunted with a client who had a set of .375 and .500 pn a blaser. Impressed with the accuracy, didnt like the fact that after reloading the blaser was uncocked. Ejectors vs extractors?

I have seen several multi barell sets for the k gun. I remember 2 I liked, as they would do everything. One was .470 NE, .375 and a set of 20gage barrels. Both of the rifle barells had hand detachable scopes. As I recall the 20 gage barrels on the rifle frame worked quite well. The other I called the North American set .375 and 30-06 with hand detachable scopes. They came in fitted americases. I will say I think the .470 would be easier to sell over the 500/416 when you start looking at your next double.
