I won't post the link since we're not supposed to but search on "churchill barrel" and should come up. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Pretty nice barrels. Chopper lump, treble grip, side clip action. Must have been on a higher grade double at one time. Nitro for black (light cordite) proofs too. Sad to think that this is what remains of what was once a very fine double.

Huvius: "Pretty nice barrels. Chopper lump, treble grip, side clip action. Must have been on a higher grade double at one time. Nitro for black (light cordite) proofs too. Sad to think that this is what remains of what was once a very fine double." ______________________________ "Pretty nice barrels," " Nitro for black (light cordite) proof too," I THINK NOT! If you enlarge the picture of the barrel flats proof marks, and look carefully, you will see the following: In the bottom section of the proof marks, left side, an original proof stamp, ".470 EX," and just below that, an original British proof stamp "CORDITE 75---500 MAX," the proof for .470. What someone has done, for unknown reasons, is to bore out the .470 barrels to .500 bore, and chambered them to .500, 3.00 inch case, AND, in upper section of barrel flats, as well as on top rib, they stamped them "CORDITE 55 grns, 440 Bullet," which doesn't have anything to do with original, or even with later, British proof house; British proof never did stamp word "BULLET." in proof marks. Once metal was removed from bores, from original .470, to .500, bores and chambers, they became structurally weaker, so the person having done this, decided to use them at much decreased breech pressure than full nitro .500: 55 cordite, 440 grain bullet = 8 long tons breech pressure, as apposed to 11 long tons breech pressure for .500 NE, 70 gr cordite, 570 gr bullet. (Originally, they were .470, 70 gr cordite, 500 gr bullet 14 long tons breech pressure.) Now we know why they are being sold on ebay, by a seller claiming to not know anything about them.

I see. Just saw the 55 cordite and assumed it to be a light cordite load for a 500.
