Guys,
In addition to being on AR, I'm a member of the Blaser Pro forum, for Blaser owners/shooters. One of out members is a career Marine, who just returned from his 4th tour in Afganistan and Iraq. Colonel Dave Barnes has been assigned a group in Texas of Marines who are casualties from the Iraq/Afganistan conflict...amputees, paralytics, burn victims, etc, and have been assigned there for long-term care and rehabilitation. A number of these guys were active hunters/shooters before being deployed. Dave has spent his own time and funds taking these guys out on weekends to shoot at local ranches. He even sold one of his personal guns to provide ammo for the guys.

We are working on helping them on a few fronts. Larry (Elk 88101) has arranged free passes to the DSC show in January, tickets to the banquet, and the Hyatt is providing rooms for gratis. They LOVE the idea of attending DSC! Secondly, we are sending spare ammunition to Colonel Barne's house that can be used by the guys for their weekend shoots, as there's no government funding for such activities. I just boxed up a few hundred rounds that I think could be put to a better cause, and am sending them out tomorrow.

I know a few of you folks in the DRSS, but don't know who arranges the shoot on January 10th. These guys would go absolutely NUTS if they were to be invited to attend. What a great opportunity for both them and us. If someone responsible for the event could PM me, we could discuss it. I may even be able to get magazine coverage of their participation in the shoot.

Here's some small excerpts from Dave's note to us on Blaser Pro:

"I am deeply honored and humbled by the continued response that comes on a daily basis. Every time I lose faith in current politics, I am reminded that there are great Americans out there who care about these young men and women."

" I bring in my own gun magazines and they disappear quickly. They (Wounded Warriors) just saw the movie "Hit Man', so now they all want to shoot an LRS!!! Please come and visit our facility at any time. The door is always open. You think your hunting and safari stories are boring? These guys will eat them up and ask for more!"

(Ammo they need for the guns they take to the range)
223, 44 Mag, 460 S&W (so 44 Spl, 454 Casull, 45 LC work too), 45 ACP, 22-250, 308, 30-30. We have a 30-378 too, but I know that's a long shot, ammo-wise!

Colonel Dave's home address:
(Note: after Ft Hood, security is too high to ship direct to the hospital base)

Dave Barnes
991 Oak Park
Shertz, TX 78154

Mark it as coming from a concerned member of Accurate Reloading!!! Lets get going!...Biebs

Mike, Thanks, we're working with a bank to collect checks, and once they clear, to issue us a debit card we can send to Colonel Dave for expenses. I'll post the progress.

Rich, still working on that. A guy on Blaser Pro is setting up an account. I'll post when ready. For now, check the ammo vault for anything in those calibers Colonel Dave mentions. Send to his house with the address given. Dave was spending his own money on ammo for these guys to plink with when he takes them out on weekends. I think we can do better than that.

Jon

Is there anything else on their wish list besides ammo and cash, e.g. spotting scopes, gloves, lead sleds?

Yo are really terrific for spearheading this...

Hey, great idea. Since they are into shooting and have nothing, spotters, Lead-Sled, shooting bags, shooting glasses...all would make sense. Thanks for thinking about it...I have a multi-lens pair of shooting glasses and a yoke and bags I can add as well.

Bump for ammunition contributions for veteran's day. These guys sacrificed everything but their lives, and now live with the horrific injuries for the rest of their lives. How about sending some spare ammunition in the listed calibers down to Colonel Dave Barnes, so at least they can enjoy shooting again.

I order a lot of ammo from Natchez shooter supply. I'll call those guys to see if I can get a donation of ammo or at least a break in price. Need a shipping address. Will ship directly from NSS to Vets. Will keep you posted on NSS response. I will order directly from them and ship from them.
From a Navy guy, everybody needs to chip in!

I have not been following this thread.

I think we (Biebs and I, by e-mail) had a miscommunication. I was refering to the AR party on Saturday Night, at which, of course, the Marines will be welcome.

I have nothing to do with the planning of the DRSS event (which is out of town.. not in Dallas).

I'm sorry if their has been a mistake and I take the blame, if so.

Please make sure that the Marines do come to the party, though.

Edit added:
By e-mail Biebs and I have it squared away...

Gentlemen I think there certainly has been a miss-understanding here, and Biebs needs to undo the problem post haste, and refrain from making board dicisions for the DRSS.

While we have nothing against hosting a group of Vets to a shoot, we have not been asked to do so.
The Jan 10Th get together is a members in good standing meeting, for members only, and has been booked solid for months. It is also not for open publication on this or any other website. The Hoot & Shoots ARE open to the public however, but that is an zebra of an intirely different stripe!

While a shoot for the Vets may be worked out, it would take some time to not only find a place to shoot, but to work through the legistics of such an undertaking. Some time in the spring maybe this could be done, but for now we have too many irons in the fire for an undertaking of this magnitude!

No problem, I saw the mention of the Jan 10th "event", and (mis)assumed it was one of your Hoot & Shoot events. I'm working on arranging a cull Hog/Doe hunt for them after the DSC.

Judge G, if you'll forward to MAC the pix I sent of some of Colonel Dave's charges, he'll see just why I'm fired up about this cause. I'm certainly not trying to make decisions for the DRSS...Biebs

Biebs,
As I have stated in my email and PMs to you, you and the Marines and any Vets are welcome to attend our next Hoot and Shoot near Houston Texas in April or May of 2010, next year. As I stated, I will be glad to help make arrangements for that shoot! All you need to do is contact me. I'm still waiting to hear from you.

I will take the entire blame for any misunderstanding. I invited Biebs to bring the Marines to the AR party (to which everyone is invited). I wasn't clear enough as to what I meant and, being old as hell, confused the dates somewhat.

Shame on me for causing confusion. thumbdown

I do hope the Marines do stop by the Comfort Inn if they are in Dallas for DSC! I'll bring my Searcy .450 N.E. and let the guys shoot the orange juice machine or something. Big Grin

I have a whitetail hunt at a ranch in Michigan I have been working on to find a candidate from either our wounder warriors or a decorated soldier. Frankly this has been harder than I imagined to find someone. If Dave wants to call me direct he is welcome to at 248-802-8249.

OK now I am a bit confused,

When did the DRSS actually become a real organization with members in good standing? And what are the fees and or procedures to become a member now?
