Thinking this may be a good way to get cheap practice in my fishermans cabin (target acquisition etc) with the .450ne double I am having built. Anyone have experiences with something like this?

Thinking about it, it has to be centerfire...

Why does it have to be centerfire?
I had an insert barrel for a 12G in 22 Magnum that used the normal 12G firing pin and also used the 12G extractor/ejector to operate the case extractor on the insert.

I don't know how cheap a pair of einstecklauf's would be for "practice". Even the used, short Sempert-Krieghoff's run over $300.00, each. Full length, centerfire rifle inserts are above $1,000 I believe, each.

22 rim fire einstecklauf's work just fine. I have a short S/K in a drilling and it shoots MOA out to 35 yards

Have you considered using reduced load, cast bullets that regulate? It can be done and I would think be a lot less expensive than a pair of inserts.

Couldn't the inserts be shorter than full length? It's not like the .22 bullet is going to touch the .470 barrels.

I guess so. I mentioned that I have a short S/K, (Sempert-Krieghoff), 10 inch barrel einstecklauf in a drilling. It's in the right, shotgun barrel. As the rimfire inserts have to be offset for the firing pin to work I expect the makers have the angles figured out so one would work in the smaller 450 barrels as opposed to a 16 bore barrel. Even so if you can find one used it will be over $300 unless a fella gets lucky, and that happens. Just never to me!!!

I have a pair of 9.3x74r inserts for 22rf that I used with my Chapuis and my drillings. The accuracy is good enough at 25 yards to have fun. I used them to work on my hold and trigger pull. It made a Sunday afternoon session at my backyard range a lot quieter. I've not seen any for bigger bored, but I'm sure someone could make them.

Hei Norway!

Yes, the .22 insert is a lot of fun and also a sneaky way of taking small game with your new rifle.

The cast bullet / sub load suggestion is a good one that is likely to be much more straight-forward to arrange.
