75% rule conundrum

I have my 45-70.sighted and regulated with 405 grain cast lead. Last week end I was shooting 300 grain bullets using yhe same powder charge per the 75% rule. I got a very good group at 25 yards but at 50 yards it spread out quite a bit and was about 4 inches high and four inches to the right. Id this common when using the 75% rule? Also if I were to load the same 405 grain bullets it was regulated with that have been powder coated would you expext a large shift in zero compared to just lubed cast bullets?

I've been shooting powder coated bullets this summer for the first time and I notice no different in target grouping, but I only have a 50-yard range.

As to the 75% rule, my rifles seem to be fairly accurate but not AS accurate as the original load. You can also try the rule in reverse--the 405-grain bullet and 75% of the powder charge. Use filler to keep the powder next to the primer for good ignition. See if this helps.

Thanks Cal. I will probably stick with just lead uncoated the rifle likes them. I guess I need to go ahead and get a mold and cast my own. I am already casting .68 balls and Lyman 525 grain slugs for a 12 bore project why not add 405 grain .458 bullets. I guess good groups at 25 yards playing with a 300 grain bullet is okay.

Gentlemen the 75% rule is only a starting point in most cases. Most often one must move up and/or down slightly to get the load to work properly. I have found over time that the substituting of a bullet of approximately 75% of the weight of the normal bullet with a full load of powder or close up, or down works better that the normal weight bullet and 75% powder load.

Every double rifle in the world will shoot slightly different with the same load that works perfectly another rifle.

If all double rifles would regulate perfectly with a load that shoots in one double rifle they wouldn't be any more expensive that a Walmart bolt rifle.

I have found the same--the 75% rule works best with the lighter bullet than the other way around.

But, hey MAC, I've bought all of my doubles at Wal Mart.

Where else would one buy GARBAGE CAN Classic double rifles, instead of the best double rifle in the world?
