I have had my Rodda 450/400J for years now and have been very happy with it. A few times over the years, in the heat of competition, I have strummed the rear trigger and had it double on me. I have a small hand with relatively short fingers and the length of pull is 15" from butt to front trigger. This LOP is perfect for me in every way except that my index finger is just barely getting to the front trigger and that is not enough for a solid rest. Before you say the LOP is too long, I took the 1" silvers pad off of it and it changed nothing. I have more than a few English double shotguns that all have double triggers which I prefer, and I pulled a few out to look at the trigger spacing on them, as I have never doubled one of them. The spacing of the triggers is pretty uniform on all of them and very close to the DR. All of my shotguns have straight hand stocks and as I was shouldering back and forth between the rifle and the shotguns, the light went on and I realized that my rifle's stock is fatter behind the action than my shotguns and even if I choke up on the stock, my index finger still cannot get fully at a 90 degree angle on the front trigger so it wants to slip off under recoil. I have crutched the problem by using the back trigger first, which works, but I would like to correct the problem. There is no way to remove any wood as there is no excess on the panels behind the boxlock action. I was wondering if having the front trigger re-arched approx. 1/8 to max 3/16 to the rear would be possible? There is plenty of clearance for my fingers if I had this done. Anyone ever hear of this being done?

I have had the front trigger bent on one of my guns & my smith thought this was a common practice.

I can't comment on gunsmithing issues as I don't even turn the screws of my doubles.

As to "strumming," the last time a double doubled on me was in the mid-1990s (.577 Cashmore). Since then I have a habit of firing the rear trigger (left barrel) first and never a double firing issue. It is not just the doubling issue, but I find I get a better grip and shoot more accurately with the rear trigger for the first shot.

Small hands and long LOP, sounds like the grip might be too long or open for you?

I had not thought about the grip being too open, but that could sure be part of it. Bending the front trigger would probably be the easiest cure, can you do this Aaron?

I could bend it or make a new trigger with a shorter reach so as to not modify an original piece. One of course cost a lot more.

Any issues now with recoil pushing your finger into the back of the front trigger? If so an articulated front trigger might be slightly beneficial.

Shooting the back trigger is preferable and an easier fix. I don't want to take business away from Aaron, however Big Grin I would think, though, that your length-of-pull may be too long in your situation. Maybe a more narrow recoil pad? Just my 2 cents.

Aaron, I have never had an issue with banging my finger on the front trigger, that's one nice thing about the 400, mild recoil! I don't have fat fingers either, so my inclination is to bend the trigger back just enough to get some purchase on. Checkering the trigger after bending would be added insurance.
Dutch, if you reread my initial post, I poorly tried to explain my efforts around LOP. Even removing the 1" pad did not help as the issue is more the diameter of the wrist in relation to my stubby fingers. I either have to get Viagra for my index finger, or get the front trigger bent back just a bit!

Lee, if you use Viagra, your trigger finger may get longer, but you won't be able to bend it :-)

Lee440 check the measurement between the front trigger and the back of the trigger guard to see if that loop is farther away from the front trigger than your other doubles. That measurement is more important then the length of pull for a person with unusually short fingers!

Aaron can possibly modify the trigger loop if that is the problem.

You can always try the VIAGRA fix that Biebs offered! Big Grin
