My 13-year-old son, Chad, asked me to let him shoot the new double rifle in .470 N.E. I had him watch me first to see if he was okay with it and he was. I loaded up a couple snap caps and he gave 'em a shot. Then I gave him one in the right barrel with a snap cap in the left...'cause doubling might end up with him dropping the rifle...oh yeah, and it might hurt.

He shot standing up so he could recoil with the gun. He fired the rifle and looked over his shoulder at me with a "what was that" look on his face. After he handed me the rifle he found he had a bloody nose. Good thing there was plenty of snow.

Good news is he shot quite well for off-hand at 25yds (bulls-eye)...and that target is now hanging on the wall in his room.

Dad did okay too, off-hand at 25 yds, with a right and left within an inch of each other and in the bulls-eye.

Good shooting by your son. Looks like you have one great shooting rifle.

Hope you have a comfortable couch - my bet is that Mamma will not be happy (if she finds out).

I hit my nose the first time I shot Paul's 577NE...threw snot all over the rifle....maybe that is why he never offered to let me shoot it again! Paul did you ever get that thing cleaned up?

Chad, you are off to a great start. Some of my fondest memories with my son Kyle were of going shooting. He passed away last year at 14. I really enjoyed shooting with him, as I am sure your dad does with you. Keep up the good work!

My son used to flinch while shooting his 30-06. I let him shoot some 400gn loads in the 470 and he loved it! His 06 doesn't recoil at all now and the flinch is cured. He's been shooting tighter groups than me lately.
That's a good thing though.
