I was thumbing through Cartridges of the World last night, and noticed this job for the first time. Barnes said examples existed with bullets from .474 up to .483; judging from his tables, the latter was more common. So what's the story? Did some makers decide the "475" meant bore while others decided it meant groove (and so could use .470 NE bullets)?

At .483, it's 480 gn bullet would have had a lower than normal SD. Did it have a reputation for poorer penetration, or at that diameter did it do enough damage regardless?

As a past user of the .475 3.25 I can assure you it will do the job and is a darn fine cartridge.
Having used both it and the #2 version at 3.5", I don't think you'll notice the difference in SD between them and the .470 at 500 fr or the .484 at 500 gr.
Enjoy it for what it is and don't fret the little differences.

Probably a typo as Taylor did calling the .474 470NE bullet as .483". All the old .458 to .476 NE rounds are the "same."

I am anxiously awaiting someone to state/imply/theorize/claim that they can tell any difference! Smiler

Richard Harland has claimed that a 470 NE kills significantly or noticably or something better than a 458 WM. This I do not believe. He may have been shooting substandard 458 WM ammo back in his cropping days as a probable explanation of his comment.

Along those lines, the 475#2 Jeffery is an excellant round. It's caliber is .488. Awesome round!

I have 25 rounds of 1930's era Kynoch .475 3 1/4" ammo. Bullets measure .476. I believe the .483 number comes from confusion with the 475 No 2.

Woodleigh lists them as:

470 NE 0.474"
476 WR 0.476"
475 #2 0.483"
475 #2 Jeffery 0.488"

I guess you're suppose to use 476 WR bullets in the 475 NE.

Thanks for the information. I noticed later that Boddington's book on safari rifles has a section on it, and says it used .476 bullets. Barnes did mention the .475 No.2 separately and noted it had a larger bullet.

Both of my .475 3.25's slugged .483. I assumed from Barnes that they would be .475 or so. Not so, so I din't expect the second to be .475

That's impossible!! Smiler

I guess those guys just made up the rounds to suit themsleves.

So do you reload for your rifles? I guess so, huh, using .483" bullets. I suppose one can never be too careful about the real bore size with the old rifles.

Yes, I reloaded for them. Yes, I used .483 bullets. Yes, the RCBS dies came as.483 without asking. Yes, the C-H dies came at .483 without asking.

I guess that makes more sense than "465H&H"'s measurement of 0.476" bullets.

Woodleigh doesn't list anything specifically for the 475 NE. It would make sense then that the 475 would have the same diameter bullet (0.483") as the 475 #2 (0.483"), even though the 475 #2 Jeffery is listed as 0.488". Go figure!

Taylor made the comment about guys mistakenly shooting the 475 #2 and the 475 #2 Jeffery interchangeably. Smiler

Amazing. Some factory ammo was .476 and some factory rifles were .483. It's no wonder organizations such as SAAMI and CIP were formed.

I have had a .475 3 1/4" Cogswell & Harrison that shot very well. It was a .483 caliber. Whatever I shot, died.

I have a box of .475 No. 2 that is .488 caliber loaded with Woodleigh softs that I'd sell, btw.

Judge,
I think those rounds that you have are .483. Or at least the ones you sent to me once were.

Judge,

I agree with Rusty. I own Al's old C&H and he gave me some rounds you made up for him. They were all .483".

Fleming in British Sporting Rifle Cartridges list two diameters for the 475 3 1/4", .474 and .483. You could have either and it would depend on the manufacturer.

No it was a companion piece to Hoyem's "The History and Developement of Small Arms Ammunition". Hoyem gives a bullet diameter of .482 for the 475 3 1/4".
