I have owned one in .375; great shooting gun, well-balanced, accurate. I have sold 3-4 more in various calibers. Everyone I sold them to loved them.

Really beautiful as well.

I wish I could see some phots of one. The only one I have seen is of an old hammer rifle.

I certainly respect DoubleDon's view, but after holding and shooting the octogan barreled doubles, you know they are indeed an upgrade.

I guess they're not "traditional", but they are elegant and very nice handling. I should have kept the one I had. Maybe I'll get another down the road; preferably in .470.

jumping yuck

It is evident you haven't held one of the top of the line Merkels with the very slim tapered octagon barreled side lock double rifles.

Yes Mac, I have. Laugh your ass off till it hurts. Wink I handled one at Hendershots a couple years ago. I was not at all impressed. Too contemporary for my taste. Just my opinion. Out of respect I shall withhold the barf and a great jumping laugh at your response. Big Grin

I looked at them at SCI 2 years ago and really liked it. There was an article in some rifle magazine, can't remember which one, around the same time that had an article on it. My only complaint was that the cape buff engraving was only offered on the .470, I think. It wasnt offered on the .450/400 which is the one I would get.

My mistake that you had never handled one, and now find that you just have poor taste! Big Grin

I have a old German hammer hammer double with octagon barrels in 450 BPE so they have been around for a long time. I have also sold a few V-C's with octagon barrels. Not a popular request, and may not be for everyone, but they can still look very classic if done correctly.

It's a matter of one's personal "eye". If I had the money
for all the D/Rs that I want, there would definitely be ex-
amples with octogonal barrels in my vault.

D/R Hunter

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

I've had them in 470 and 500 NE. There are a number of upgrades to that limited edition run other than just the octagonal barrels. Nice rifles.
