Hello everyone! Im finally starting to slow down at work enough to do some loading and mayby sneak off and bust some of these hogs that have been flipping me off all summer as I fly over. For the first time Im gonna load for my Merkel 140. I have Norma brass, Nosler 286 partitions, Woodleigh 286 gr softs and Hodgdon 4831SC. I noticed on the H website the starting load was 66 grains and 70 was max being compressed. Anyone have experience with this combo?

Just use RL-15, enough to get the velocity you want.

That's about as complicated as it is.

Yes. I have futzed with this and never really got it to work satisfactorily in my Chapuis 9.3x74R

I finally settled on 58 gr IMR4350 which lets me put 6 rounds (3R; 3L) into a 4-inch circle at 75 yds. That's as good as my old eyes let me shoot and I know my limitations and respect them.

Yes, the 4831SC compresses.

I am new to loading and posted for assistance a few times on this forum - there are several very helpful threads not too long ago and they might help you. Try this one:

a lot of guys were very helpful. There are several more recent than that one.

Good luck!

I'm fresh out of 15 and would like to load up something tonight or in the morning so I can take it to work. If I could hit a gallon jug at 50 steps, and I get a little spare time I would call it good and go shoot a hog.

Gotcha- the "best" loads with 4831 SC were at the lower end.

Not sure if you can shoot good enough to hit a jug at 50 but try 68 grains. It shoots well in my chapuis. You may hav to remove the ray bans to shoot pretty boy....

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! I doubt you will really need those Nosler Partitions and Woodleighs either. Get some PRVI's. Much cheaper!

Peter.

I think he said "50 steps" not "50 yards".

Anyway, it isn't difficult to hit a gallon jug at 50 yards.

The PRVIs are a good suggestion - They shoot well in my Chapuis and I just bought some on sale at Graf - maybe sale still on?

+1 on the Priv's. I like them so much I bought around 500. Should last me awhile. Smiler 68 grains H4831SC and the 286 grain Privi works in my Chapuis. Norma brass and CCI Large Rifle Mag primers.
