I just bought my first double, a Merkel 470NE.

I got a screaming deal on this bad boy, and of course as usual I wont bank these saved dollars, NOOO, that would be TOOO easy and smart. I don't seem to be happy unless I customize my weapons until I can't ever recover the investments made in them. It's a sickness.

I don't like the notched rear sight. I want to replace it or modify it to a shallow V. My initial thought is to have someone install the shallow V and then have the sight engraved with a line or V. Then inlay in gold. I was also thinking about having 470 N.E.engraved and inlayed in the center rib.

Another more functional choice might be a white front sight/white bead combo.

Looking for advice, ideas and thoughts from the double experts.

JJ at Champlins did my Merkel a few years ago. Correct recoil pad, V rear sight like you speak of and a warthog ivory bead front sight. That was one double that was built like a tank and shot perfectly.....I miss it sometimes.

The standard Recknagel (NECG) V sight will replace the notch type (also a Recknagel).

I think I am gonna put a ghost ring on mine and change the front blade to a small bead with flip-up ivory.

It just occurred to me that the Aust Merkels came
with V Rear sights.

Maybe the US importer needs to ask for the same.

For the last 2 years factory V rear come as a standard on African models:

Same goes for front bead:

So I guess rifle in question is older.

It could be an older model. I know it was auctioned this fall at an SCI dinner and is new, but I will check ppwk to determine build date if possible. It is surely different than your picture--mine has a square front sight(bead) and matching notched square rear---not shallow V.

Mike,
I am afraid it was inevitable. I blame it completely on meeting you! My retirement has been in jeopardy ever since we met!

You can shoot (or maybe I can shoot) just as accurately or maybe better, since I can actually see it, with a big white bead.
