clayman216450 NE Powder question
I was reading Shooting the British DR by G. Wright. In it he mentione a Nitro for Black load
using 350 gr jacketed bullet with H 4895 powder and some filler. I use this powder often in several of my rifles with great results. Does anyone know if it can be used for a full load?
Does anyone use it for the 450NE??

Mike BrooksI've had great sucess with NE450 #2's(Tony) 75% rule using full loads of powder and 75% weight bullet. For the 450NE it's a 350 grn bullet.

Bwana_DaveI've been using IMR-4831 for full loads and XMP-5744 for reduced loads, so I can't comment on H4895.
Use a double rifle. It just feels better.

N E 450 No2For Nitro for Black loads I use IMR 4198.
Around 50 grains would be a good start in a 450 3 1/4". You must use filler @10 to 12 gr of dacron. It must be compressed.
If you want to use H4895, @60 grains should be about right. Again you must use filler, and it must be compressed.
Velocities should be in the 1800 to 1900fps range.

Tony, since I bought a 450 NE two days ago and have never loaded for a 450 or used dacron.... Is the dacron weighed on a scale so as to be the same with each load?

I have used IMR 4198 for 20+ years in the light nitro loads and nitro for black. For full nitro loads I use IMR 4831. I always thought faster powders may produce unsafe pressures in full nitro loads but don't have the facts--just a feeling. Also, since the above two have worked so well for me since the 1980s I did not see the reason to change. If you need formulas for conversion, just let me know.
Cheers,
Cal

Thanks for your offer. I may be contacting you. I have used 4831 as well as R 19 and have loads that shoot full charges well. I just wondered about H 4895 because I use this powder most in other rifles and calibers and find it to produce the most accuacy from all my powders
when carefully loaded. I just wondered if using it for a full load was safe as I am not an expert on the properties of powders and resulting pressures. I felt that it it gave me same rusults aor better, it would be less powders needed.

Forgot to say that I used 60 gr. H 4895 and foam filler ( compressed ) in a nitroi for black load using a 350 gr. Hornady FP. At 50 yards rested it shot an eight shot group ( four from each bbl ) that could be covered by a 3 1/4 inch circle. I did not even try to tweak it yet.
