I've been a member on AR for many years. I don't post much, but I read a lot and try to learn as much as possible. Even though I don't post often, I still feel like I know a lot of you and feel a part of the community. So I wanted to share some good news. First, Next week I will be getting my first Double Rifle. A Merkel 141-E in 9.3x74R. I've wanted a double for years and now I finally will have one. Very excited. Second, I just found out that my wife is pregnant with TWINS! We have a boy and a girl already and now, God willing, we will add two more to our Clan. Thanks for letting me share all of my happy news and thanks for being a fun and informative resource. Cheers, Billy Bob Wise

Wise1, now add the DRSS to your sig line, you are now a member of the Double Rifle Shooter's Society You picked the best chambering you could have for your first double rifle. You will find that your other rifles will mostly gather dust in deer season, and even on jackrabit pop shooting! The chambering will handle anything in North America, and is a fun rifle to just shoot! I have a couple of Merkel double rifles, a 140E 9.3X74R , and a 140-2 Safari 470NE, and I even shoot both on deer, and wild hogs! Doubles will get into your blood! The rifle you picked will still be shooting when those four kids start hunting, and will be a good first double for them as well! ...................Congratulation on both news flashes! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Thanks everyone. Marcus! Good to hear from you. I hope you're well. Thanks for the congrats. I haven't put the rifle on a scale yet, but it is listed at 6.6 lbs. Should be an attention getter. I'm going to try to post a few pics of the rifle. (Don't have pics I can post of "The Twins" yet) Can't wait to take this little beauty hunting this fall. Interestingly, there is no cross bolt behind the receiver; first Merkel I've seen without one. And finally, a shot of the stock with some nicely figured wood. I haven't seen many Merkels with a straight comb; as this one clearly has. I'm going to have JJ sort out the factory sights for me with a more traditional set-up and install some scope mounts that will hold a Zeiss 2.5-8x32. Thanks everyone. I know I will love this rifle, but I'll love the babies even more. Can't wait to take 'em hunting. Cheers, Billy Bob Wise

Thanks, Marcus. As for first blood; if I don't shoot a pig between now and then, I should be on a cull hunt on a big ranch between Sanderson and Ft. Stockton in October. The little Merkel should get well blooded on that trip. Cheers, Billy Bob Wise DRSS Member

Wise1 are you sure your 141E doesn't have a greener cross bolt? If it doesn't it is a new modification, because every Merkel 141E that I've seen has a cross bolt, and the picture you posted looks to have one! .................. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

I guess I've got the nomenclature wrong. The rifle most definitely has the Greener cross bolt. The thing I was talking about is the bolt that passes through the stock just aft of the receiver and above the front trigger. I see this on most Merkel SxS shotguns and rifles. Nice piece. You couldn't do much better, both maker and caliber-wise, on your first double rifle.

Wise1, I see what you mean now! I simply missunderstood what you were talking about. I have two Merkel double rifles , and the 140-2, 470NE has that bolt through the stock behind the reciever, but the 140E-1, 9.3X74R doesn't have that through bolt, and is over 10 yrs old and the stock fit is just as tight as it was on day one. I pulled up the pictures of the Merkel double rifles on Granit Mountain and they all show that bolt through the stock in all of them, and I don't remember if the 141s I have seen had them. I really don't think they need them chambered for nothing larger than the 9.3X74R. They don't if my 140E-1 is any indication! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith
