Guys (and Girls) - Thanks for all of the great info as I make my first Double Rifle aquisition. As I expected, a great group of guys with a lot of good infomration. I ultimte did decide to go with the Heym "PH." I have nothing bad to say about the K-guns, Merkel's or any of the other guns mentioned. I really appreciate some thoughts abaout those guns as well. What ultimatly drove me to the Heym PH was the number of recommendatins that I got from Afican PH's who work with these guns all of he time. I have to really respect the opinion of he guys who ut thier lives, and back up he lives of others, when they recommend a gun. The Heym might cost more, and have a few less frills, but I cannot find a single flaw in its function. Since I am on the "ig 5" quest, and will be hunting Hippo and Croc as well, I wanted a proven stopper. FYI - This is a gun in a private collection, not from one of the few good high grade gun shops or internet sites. Now for the reloading data. Anyone worked with IMR 4320 for big bore relaods. I found some old data where people used it for ig bores and I tried it with my 458 Lott. I could not get better performance from any other powder than I got from the 4320. I have seen some load recommendations for the 470 N.E. using about 100 gr of 4320. Anyone used this load in th 470 and if so, what where your results? Thanks Mike for the link to to Huntington's; great stock at good prices. I have become a Woodleigh fan based on its performance to date in Africa and I plan to use the 500 gr solids and softs from Woodleigh, at least as a start.

I have never heard of anyone using IMR 4320 in a .470 NE. If I were you, I would try IMR 4831 or Reloder 15. Reloder 15 will require a filler of some sort. I am curious to know how your Heym shoots. My Heym .470 likes 85 grains RL 15 with wad (1/2" backer rod cut to length) behind a 500 grain Woodleigh soft. One grain less with a solid. Good luck and congrats. Don Deo Vindice, Don Sons of Confederate Veterans Black Horse Camp #780

Cleathorn, I'm with Dave, never heard of anyone using IMR 4320 in their DR. By far the most popular powders used in North America for those reloading DR's are IMR 4831, IMR 4350, H4350 and R-15 w/wad which is probably the most popular of the four powders mentioned. IIRC Wright cautions against 4320, RL15 or H4831sc is proven with good data out there.

I'm on the 4831 bandwagon. No need for filler, lots of history. NEVER has let me down in accuracy and velocity consistency. DuggaBoye-O NRA-Life Whittington-Life TSRA-Life DRSS DSC HSC SCI

Cleathorn, While part of the fun of reloading is trying out combinations of components that others wouldn't consider, I would suggest following the advice stated by others regarding powder choice. While 4320 is a good powder in your Lott, that round is also designed to run at higher chamber pressures safely. The combination of 100 grains of 4320 and a 500 grain bullet in the 470 will generate higher pressures than I think you would want in your new DR. As you are already a reloader, you know the rules - start low, start safe, be careful, don't substitute any component without starting at the beginning again. Good luck and have fun.
