Gents I need your help & advice. I have been trying to get a load to regulate in my 8x57 but so far it proves elusive. I contacted Merkel & they say the rifle is regulated at the factory with Norma Oryx loads using 196 grain bullet & from 40-42.2 Norma #2 power. I have three boxes of Oryx and it is great stuff however I need to roll my own for lots of reason that you folks all know. I have Hornady 195 grain bullets and IMR 4064 which seems to be very close to the Norma # 2 powder on the burn rate charts I have seen. I have tried from 40 up to 46 grains of IMR 4064 (46 is too hot in this action) without a good result. Anyone have a good recipe for handloading for the 8x57 IRS DR? Thanks Guys

Norma lists load data on their web page. I would use this as a starting point and experiment with RL-22. You may also have to play with various types of bullets. Look for one with a similar shape to the ORYX that the gun was regulated for and you should be in good shape. ****************************************************************** R. Thanks for the reply & info Rosco. I have not used RL-22 powder. Is it closer to Norma #2 than IMR 4064? The bullet I have is the same shape & only one grain lighter. I did not think it would be hard to find a load but so far it has been.

Phil T : I think your Merkel is provided with a device to change the point of impact of one of the barrels. In your case, I would check the velocity of the 196 grs. Oryx, then try to duplicate that speed with the Hornadys and if that load is safe and produce good individual groups, but does not regulate, change the point of impact with the device until you are happy. Good luck.

Pulki Thanks for the impute. I think you are right about using bullet speed to match the Norma Oyrx loads. I do not have a chonograph but know people that do. You are right to think that same bullet speed & same weight should give regulation. I will try that next. This should not be this tough but DR are fussy about their diets! I just bought 2 boxes of Oyrx fron Europe and the bill was $140 Canadian which is Ok for hunting but limits my practising with the gun. Ya can't run into Canadian Tire & grab a box either so handloads are a must. Thanks Phil

My load for my Bernardelli 8X57 JRS is 42-44 grains of RL-15 and Nosler 180 grain .323 ballistic tip. Be sure and document your Norma factory loads over a chronograph. This give you a base line to work from. It will save you lots of time and guess work. The idea is to try to get as close as you can without making any adjustments, then tweeking with the adjustment. Rusty Thanks I will find Reloader 15 and start a little light. I see on another forum that RL 15 is Norma 203. So that should help a lot. What do you use your 8x57 for? Can you tell about it's effectivness? I am new to this round and have only taken one buck with it so far but will take it on a bear hunt soon.

Phil, I have only cut paper with mine. One of my DRSS Brothers has used his with great success on hogs. I would use mine on most any North American game up to elk or moose. I think it might be a bit light for bear. But, that is just my opine. I have not hunted bear. Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate.
