I read through several past posts on the Chapuis DR's and the general consensus seems to be they are worth the money. Does that sentiment still hold? I am considering and 8 X 57 or 7 X 57....(I have the 7 X 57 dies, brass and bullets for my drilling).

I love both of my UGEX's. One is a 9,3x74R and the other is a 30R Blaser.
My only complaint is they build them with the comb just a shade to high which means I can only shoot about 20 rounds at a session out of the 9,3. I do plan on scoping both at some point then the higher comb will actually help.
IMO the UGEX is the best value in a double on the market as long as you don't need
anything larger than the 9,3.
The last Alaskan moose I shot was killed with the 9,3 offhand, stock iron sights at a lazered 287 yardsSmiler

They are very dependable and accurate light rifles that are a joy to carry.

Heym makes a nice small O/U in the calibers you are looking for but not sure what they cost.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I have had two of them; currently an 8mm. As for the comb height, you can request a straighter stock; ie, less drop at the heel. I get them from Dale Nygaard; takes about 3-4 months. They are the best deals in a DR out there, for 9.3 and below. If you want a 7mm, that is only avail in the round frame, RGEX; costs more but comes with 4x wood as standard. Mine are UGEX. If you get it regulated for a scope, you have to send them the scope and it will be reg for 100 meters instead of 50, which the irons are. The only thing I didn't like about the 9.3 is the weight; very, very light but a scope would help. Here is my 8mm:

I've had a 375 and a 470 Chapuis. Both were nice guns and shot great. The 470 had over 1000 rds thru it when I sold it and still locked up tighter than most new doubles. Great guns for the money.

I’ve never personally owned a Chapuis double rifle, but have several friends who do own them. I have shot their rifles extensively, and I have never shot one that wasn’t regulated perfectly, and as accurate as any double rifle I’ve ever fired, regardless of make or chambering. The one thing I would suggest is to buy one chambered for a flanged cartridge. The 8X57R, 7mmR, 30Blaser are all very good general hunting rifles. My personal preference would be the 9.3X74R however. I have two double rifles chambered for 9.3X74R and the S/S Merkel 140E-1 has become my favorite double rifle for general hunting anything in North America, and most anything in Africa with the exception of elephant, but will do in a pinch for buffalo, and the cats. The 9.3 or the 30Blaser with a good Illuminated 1-5X scope with a German No4 reticle would be about perfect for the African cats or Bear on bait.

IMO, the Chapuis doubles are value for funds expended!

My Chapuis 30R Blaser shoots "width of the barrels" at 100 yards with the scope mounted. You will be hard pressed to beat them at their current price.

Thank you gentlemen! I have several rifles in an auction in October....we'll see what the results are and if there's enough for a Chapuis.

I don't think Chapuis chambers anything without a rim.
If you want a scoped Chapuis, you will need about $6k or so from your auction. Plus you provide the scope.

It will be opensighted. I just can't get my head wrapped around a DR or drilling with a scope on it....or a Mannlicher/Schoenauer carbine. I know and understand the arguments for a scope, being 61 and having done a lot of long range shooting, (1000 yards), in my life, and have nothing against them....just ain't me!!...lol!

I had one in the 9,3x74R chambering. Factory fitted with a scope base and a Leupold 2-7X. Perfect double for plains game. I shot a Kudu, Gemsbuck, Waterbuck and a Caracal with mine. Did NOT need a second shot on anything but the Gemsbuck. I took a neck/spine shot and was just a bit off. We got him later that day.

I would love to own two, another 9,3x74R, and a 470 NE 3".

Very well made rifles, only the Searcy competes in quality and price and Butch is a bit more of a .400"+ builder.

Ok, then without the scope you can subtract about $325 for the mount and something like 250 for scope regulation.
My rule is, for below 9.3; scope. For above 9.3; no scope. For 9.3; optional but I have scopes on both of mine.
