Hey folks.

I have found a double that is made for the boltaction cartridge .375 H&Hrimless. I know extractors have to be modified yes, but would a simpel reamerjob of the flanged version do the trick for the rest?. I see the belt of the rimless version does present a challenge, but could a good gunsmith not fill in a bushing or something?. Just wondering

Jens,

I can't answer that question but if you find the answer is "No" then the next question I would ask is if it were possible to clean it up to the .375 VC which has a base of 13.95mm ahead of the rim whereas I believe the 375 H&H rim and band diameter is about 13.5mm.

Why not just shoot the belted version and don't worry about it. I have a double in 375 H&H that has never failed to eject. You will surely find ammo anywhere for the belted version also. Now you said 375 H&H RIMLESS not belted but your drawing shows belted. Is the gun chambers for the older 375 Velociped early version?

The old 400/375 Velopex also had a belt. By the expression ".375 H&HRimless" I mean the belted rimless just like what the drawing in the post show.

Yes I knew that older round had a belt but it was smaller in diameter than the current belted casesI think. I knew I spelled Velopex wrong.

I'm sure someone has done it, If you rechambered the barrel to 375 flanged you only have a small portion larger than the case at the base where the belt was. With the pressures used you may never see the case swell into this with modern heavy brass. Even if it did it would not be enough to cause a real problem. You could also mayber leave the belted extractor system and be able to fire both cartridges. Now I have not looked really close at the neck shoulder areas but it is just a thought. If anyone here has done it I"d like to hear about it also.

I’m not sure the re-chambering of the .375 H&H rimless belted chamber to the 375 Flanged magnum would not clean the chamber up enough to work fine. The flanged version is larger and longer in most of the measurements than the more modern(if you can call 100 yrs old modern) .375 H&H! Loaded properly the flanged develops less chamber pressure. If the tiny differences require slight fire forming, it wouldn’t be a problem. It would be easy by simply fire forming 100 pieces of new brass and load it for a long supply of hunting ammo.

I seem to recall having had this conversation with Butch Searcy and I seem to remember that he said the Flanged won't clean up the belted chamber for some reason.

Could be wrong but that is what my memory is telling me.

Opinions vary but I certainly wouldn't dispute Butch on anything in ragard to chambering of a firearm.
The belt being .534 dia, as opposed to .517 on the flanged in the same area would require a spacer installed in that area before chambering, while all of the rest would clean! Not the best of all worlds.

Jens, please give us the details on your 375 H&H double rifle.

I do know a few guys that have 375 H&H and 458 Win Mag doubles that work 100% of the time, at least so far.

How much have you shot it with H&H ammo???

The double in question is an english double that has been for sale for awhile now. Almost 18 months and havent´t moved in inch. I could become interested and was playing with the thought of having a flanged .375H&H rather than a Belted-rimless. I know the belted-rimless do work well. A friend has a french Chapuis works great with conventional ammo.
