Its a hammerless boxlock .470 NE and seems to be in decent condition, comes with a canvas case and some period accesories like Rangoon oil. I was looking at it also, supposedly bores VG and on face. Asking price is $27000CDN (about 28000usd -who would of thought we'd see the day our funny money was worth more than a greenback?) I've done my best comparison shopping I can on the internet and made a very uneducated decision that it is a somewhat fair price but definately no bargain

For comparisons sake, there is a very nice John Rigby 500 NE boxlock at Cabelas for $24,000. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/community/gun...WE?hierarchyId=10473 _______________________________

Yukon I think we are talking about 2 very different guns here. That one at Cabelas is a Mexican Rigby, prob Merkel ?

Why Mexico and Merkel? Aren't the newer Rigbys all made in California? I understand the new Rigbys vs. old are apples and oranges. _______________________________

Yukon The term "Mexican" Rigby is used in a derogatory way.

Make sure you check for stressed rifling and get the barrels slugged. 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming...

The best thing about the California Rigby is that it is made on a Merkel action! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Calgarychef & notlim: I agree, that doesn't sound like a bargain. That kind of price goes with bore condition fairly described as "excellent +", not "very good". Rigby didn't build their own boxlocks (none of the London makers did). They had them built for them by a variety of Birmingham makers. The best of the Rigby boxlock double rifles from that period came from Webley & Scott. If it is from Webley and the 1920s date is accurate, it will have Webley's number stamped on the left side of the fore-end loop, and it will be in the 13,XXX range. Rigby's sourced from other trade makers are ususally not of as good quality, but there are exceptions. -------------------------------------------- "Serious rifles have two barrels, everything else just burns gunpowder."
