I have a friend who has a new Merkel .500NE (same guy as rslus's), and is looking for a recipe using Woodleigh 570's.

I found one using 105grs of IMR 4350 rated at 2110fps - good load? Anything using H380 which he has on-hand?

Thank you for your help!

Bill I would PM Dirk Lawyer as he has a Heym 500NE and had done quite a bit of loading for it.

Bill:

I had a Merkel .500 NE that I sold last year, but here is what worked for me:

96 grains of RL-15
2 grains of dacron
570 grain Woodleigh softs
Bell Brass
Fed 215 primers

When starting with RL-15 (and probably a different lot number than the one I used), I would start around 90 to 91 grains and work up from there.

I use the same load Paul described, only I use Kynoch foam wads (1/2) in place of the dacron. Worked five times in June with no compliants from its victims.

I basically used the same 570 woodleigh load and found it to be extremely accurate.I have some cast bullet loads with XMP 5744 that shot great in this gun and to same POA if anyone is interested. -Rob

114.5g H4831, Fed primer and 570 Woodleigh gives a nice 100% load density and regulates perfect in my old German 500NE. I've never tried any of the fatser burning powders, but suspect they may give a little less recoil but you may need fillers.

I use the exact load described above, ie. 96 gr.RL 15 + 1/2 foam wad + Federal 215 primer, and, trust me, it gives A LOT less recoil than the H 4831 loads. The 500NE is no pop gun, and if one can lessen the perceived recoil by a noticeable margin and still get good regulation, I call it a good thing
