I finally got to kill some hogs today with the merkel 470 I bought from Bal and at the same time realized the value of a double barrel rifle under certain circumstances. We have been very busy at work for months and have been unable to do much hunting, just an occational jug shoot or load test. With recent flooding the hog population has become concentrated and easy to spot from the plane so I have been making notes and calling land owners getting permission to hunt their property. Today I went with one of the land owners and we found ourselves tracking a group in some of the thickest, most mosquito/snake infested swamp you could imagine. With palmettos limiting our visibility to a few yards we finally jumped the hogs and in the process I got a shot off at some hair (later determined to be a gut shot). We slowly moved forward until we nearly stepped on the wounded hog which charged us from (this is no lie!!) less than 3 yards! He got one shot off from the hip with his BAR which jammed/missed and I had 2 470 slugs in the pig within milliseconds which put an end to the pants soiling that my hunting partner was experiencing! After he got cleaned up and I quit laughing we loaded up the pig and proceeded to a small wheat field down the turnrow. We stopped the ATV and walked a short distance and spotted a group of 6 in the field at about 200 yards. We started moving closer with little to no cover and was spotted at about the 100 yard point. The hogs broke into a full sprint to the woods and to my supprise I had two on the ground before the land owner found the hogs in the scope and got a shot off. The first was hit in the heart(luck!!), the other stayed down about 10 seconds then got up and made it to the woods. I tracked it a short distance in some very thick cover and decided to abort after nearly stepping on the largest cottonmouth snake I have ever seen. We were running out of daylight as well. Sorry no pictures, didnt have my camera. The hogs were nothing spectacular, first one was a sow at about 150#, second was a young boar at about 100 and the one that got away was in the 125+range. My load was 89gr RL15/foam and a 500 gr woodleigh. I added a leather pad to make the LOP 15.5 to the front trigger which makes this rifle point really well for me. Double Rifle Shooters Society

I KNOW that your 600 is BAD TO THE BONE. I also remember one day, when we were doing some "plinking", when you shot a tree, and I was suddenly, and rudely, knocked down and covered with a cord and a half of wood. You will really like your 470 double. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY
