Hello, Just wondering what guys here have loaded a 350-360 grain bullet in the 450 nitro, over full house loads for use on smaller game? From what iv e read it will get you close to regulation. What was the velocity? How much less recoil? Thanks.

I do not load for a 450 nitro, but do reload for a 470 & a 458 lott DR,I have loaded the 350 in the lott & also a lighter bullet in the 470,the lighter bullets will regulate well, but probably take a few less grains short of the full house loads, for example,my 470 takes 87 gr of Rx15 with a 500 gr bullet & 84 gr with a 400 gr bullet to shoot to regulation, recoil is also substantially reduced,I have shot a lot of warthogs & pigs using the lighter bullets, they work great. DoubleBC: In my .450 no2 I shoot 350-grain Hornady bullets and they regulate fine. I do the same with 300-grain bullets in my .450-400. The rule will also work with a full weight bullet and 75% of powder although I've heard not quite as accurate. When spring is here I will experiment a great deal with this second option. Bill/Cal Thank you for the replies, Very honoured. Im wondering what the increase in velocity i so I can calculate trajectory. Partially because im a bit nuts and over think things, but Im thinking why get a 450 400 or 375 when I can get a 450, load it down for NA game. Fire a 350 gr bullet at reasonable velocity. Maybe even put QD mounts on it for the reduced loads? Have my cake and eat it too. What do you think? Kelly.

If you can do it in the way you wrote, I would say: "It is an great and practical idea."

I have all of my shooting info packed away to make room for my shipment of Bore Rifle books so I can't give an exact velocity. Memory tells me a 350-grain from my .450 no2 with 105 grains of IMR 4831 was 2350-4000 fps. cheers, Cal _______________________________ Cal Pappas, Willow, Alaska www.CalPappas.com www.CalPappas.blogspot.com 1994 Zimbabwe 1997 Zimbabwe 1998 Zimbabwe 1999 Zimbabwe 1999 Namibia, Botswana, Zambia--vacation 2000 Australia 2002 South Africa 2003 South Africa 2003 Zimbabwe 2005 South Africa 2005 Zimbabwe 2006 Tanzania 2006 Zimbabwe--vacation 2007 Zimbabwe--vacation 2008 Zimbabwe 2012 Australia 2013 South Africa 2013 Zimbabwe 2013 Australia 2016 Zimbabwe 2017 Zimbabwe 2018 South Africa 2018 Zimbabwe--vacation 2019 South Africa 2019 Botswana 2019 Zimbabwe vacation 2021 South Africa 2021 South Africa (2nd hunt a month later) ______________________________

I meant to write 2350-2400 fps. Not 4000fps. My 75% loads for the 450 No2 and the 450/400 3 1/4" [using the full load of powder the rifle regulates with the standard weight bullet], I get @2330fps in the 450 No2 with the 350gr Hornady, and in the 450/400 3 1/4" with 300gr Hawks I also get @2330fps. My 75% rule, refers to using a bullet that weighs @75% of the normal standard full weight bullets with the same powder charge you use for full power loads, give or take a grain of two depending on the particular double. I load my 500/450 Holland Royal with 350 gr Hornady Round Nose bullets with the same charge of R-15 as the 480 gr Woodleighs and it shoots to the same POI at about 2300fps.

Should this work the same for the 9.3x74R with the 235 or 250 weight bullets? Happy new year Malek Good shooting/hunting and God's best Best regards Malek Good Hunting/Shooting and God's best.

That concept appeals to me, Cal, but does it assume the powder is pretty fast-burning? To do it with 4831 (a popular powder with some db-rifle handloaders) would seem to take us into dangerous territory. Regards - Paul

Sambarman338: Good day. I use a hot primer and a filler with reduced powder charges of 4831 to keep the powder next to the primer for good ignition and have no problems, no hang fires, etc... I can only speak from my experience. I will do extensive shooting in the summer and will file a report with the AR folks here as to accuracy and velocity.
