In another thread doublerifle VS bolt action accuracy, I have heard that one cannot shoot too many shots with a doublerifle because the barrels will warp and regulation will ofcouse go off.? Have does that hold up with modern doubles regardless of caliber...or is it just an old tale??. DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. Chapters in Sweden & Norway

Mr. Paulsen, like any rifle barrel the hotter it gets, the more the group will wander, string, or spread! One can shoot as many shots as needed to put down a charge, or kill a Buffalo. However, no rifle will stand long strings of shooting on a firing range without letting the barrel cool. It may not be obvious at the moment, but damage is being done, nonetheless, regardless of type of rifle! The big danger of shooting very long strings of shots without cooling the barrels on a double is the fact that the barrels are necessarily thin, and heat quickly, and may damage the solder joint! The double rifle is the only type of firearm system that didn't start out as a war weapon, but was designed from the start for hunting, and certainly not bench shooting. The double rifle being a hunting rifle, and is designed to be fired first from a cool barrel set, at the end of a stalk. This is a situation where a one, two punch is the order of the day, a fast re-load, and another one or two at a fleeing, or charging animal! Rarely are more than four shots fired on an animal without some time laps, to allow the barrels to cool at least a little. The barrels being thin walled, that causes rapid heating, also allows quick cooling as well! I think, though damage is done with long strings of shots, without cooling, in any rifle, I think one would have to do this a long time, to destroy the regulation in the double rifle. And considering the recoil of most large NE rounds used in these rifles, I think your shoulder would suffer more than the rifle! So I guess what I'm saying is where there is smoke there is usually some heat, but mostly, in this case, it is mouth rattling, for the most part, IMO! ............... ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Thanks MacD37. Being new kid on the block here in this doubleriflething, asking the more streetwise is wise. Doublerifles are made for hunting, and not for beltfeededhighcapacityfirepower... thanks again DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. Chapters in Sweden & Norway
