Picked up a large quanity of Speer 270's for my Chapuis in 9,3x74R. Would like to shoot these for practice.
What are some good starting loads for this bullet?

My Chapuis likes 62 gr IMR 4831 with the 270 Speer. Groups are great.

Only problem is the bullet is too soft. On piggies and WT deer they deliver severely curved wound canals in which they leave large pieces of themselves.

I would not trust them on the gristle plate of a large pig or any game animal larger than a whitetail.

Only bought them for paper practice.

Anyone use the Hornady 286s on game yet? They're not much more expensive than the Speers and might be a better game bullet.

I have killed a few deer and wild pigs with the Speer 270gr bullet from my 9,3x74R Chapuis.

It has woked great including a quartering shot on a 325lb pig at 19 yards, it was a bang flop. It is the only Speer bullet I have recovered, and it was mushroomed perfectly, good weight retention etc.

I am a heavy,deep penetrating bullet kind of guy but I would not hesitate to use this bullet on all game smaller than elk. Wouls not be afraid to shoot an elk broadside with it, but you cannot always plan on that.

I used 59gr of RL-15, velocity was 2390fps.
That load shoots very good in my double.

However I discovered that with 65 gr of IMR 4831 my double shoots most 285/286gr bullets to the samd place so I plan to try the Speer 270 with that powder charge as well.

I have killed one pig with the Hornady factory 9,3 load amnd it did fine, but no better than the 270 Speer has, but you cannot make a comparasion on just one kill.

My favorite all round Soft for the 9,3 is the 289 Woodleigh RN.
From Impala to Zebra,jackel, klipspringer, and kudu, to bear and capebuff, it has worked perfect.
