FrostbitA-Zoom snap caps for 450 3 1/4
I don't see 450 NE listed on the Lyman website for A-Zoom snap caps. Just about every other Double caliber. Am I just missing them somewhere?

Matt MooreWouldn't 450/400s work if they make them?

Yes they do.
Occasionally you need to fiddle with the rim
but minor and that is more to do with the gun's
chambers than anything else.

Mike BrooksFrosty, build your own set. It's quick easy and cheap. Bring brass and I'll do it for you if you want.
I did a set for alaskaman11 recently.

Mike, can you please tell me how to do that? Thanks!

nopride2Snap caps out of brass is easy. I replace the primer with a turned piece of hard nylon.

You're on Mike. I'll give you a call when time settles down a bit. Do they hold up well to repeated use or do you have change out the striking surface often?

I've got them but with the short build and flat nose they don't mimic live rounds for reloading practice very well.

They aren't supposed to mimic live rounds.
For that, make up 4 DUMMY rounds with sand
and bullets. Make it a lot easier.

Making your own from fired brass is easy, the only decision is what to use for the primer pocket. One of my friends showed me a great tip. He took a leather hole punch, and punched out some scrap boot leather. He took the little piece of "former hole plug" and it press fit in snugly. Works great, basically free and not hard on your pins. Mine are from black leather so they are very obvious as dummy rounds.

twoseventyMaking your own from fired brass is not only easy but lasts forever. If you have an RCBS stuck case remover, drill out and tap the the primer pocket. Buy some nylon screws three inches long and screw them in from the case mouth end until it is flush with the primer pocket. As the firing pin wears an indentation, just turn the screw in about one turn and trim with a sharp knife. It will take a long time to wear out the nylon screws.

That would be foolish wouldn`t it?
Shootaway
Why do you say that ?
Making up "dummy" rounds makes it easier to
practice at home.

These are the short ones Frosty. Not dummy rounds. The replacement parts are currently $pendy, at Lowes they are $0.63!

sambarman338Considering advice seen regarding decocking on another forum, I'd be careful about ersatz snapcaps. For instance, it seems that holding a copper coin against the standing breech is not recommended but expensive, horn decockers are.
My son-in-law got me some nickel-plated .450/.400 snapcaps from Kynoch, which are short and seem to last.
Dunno what he paid but you'd think they'd have the right resistance.

nopride2If a snap cap is all your looking for A Zooms are so cheap it's a no brainer. The only reason I make a snap cap is A Zoom doesn't make them.

Mike BrooksA-Zoom is a division of Lyman. They do list a part number for the 450 NE. I called and asked sometime ago about when they were going to do another run of them. They said at that time there were no plans because there were no rifles being made for he 450..
They must not be paying attention much. They make 600 Nitro snap caps and as few 600's are being made there might be a few more 450's made??

shootawayI forgot to mention that an akward fitting snap cap or whatever you want to call them can screw things up in an action because of the stress it may cause. That was the reason I stopped using a-zoom in my bolt action rifles.Unlike brass, the material used to make them may not give in and cause all kinds of issues. It can cause stress on bolt stop pins, trigger pins etc...Something to think about before using them in an expensive double.I will stick with ordinary cases as dummy rds.
