Looking for advice on which pad to use. I want to increase the LOP by about 1/2". Would a 1" Pach. Decelerator give me that over the standard pad on the rifle now? Any better choice?

I really like the decelerator sporting clays pad. It has smooth hard rubber on the top to prevent it catching on your clothes as you mount the gun. I have them on all by big bore guns.

Limbsaver make a Medium size, Low Profile 5/8th inch thick Grind to fit Recoil Pad. Part number 10544 That should give you closer to the 1/2" you are looking for. Good pads as well.

Kick Eze makes a fantastic recoil pad in 1" and 1.375" thickness. They really absorb recoil too! Kevin Big 5 Encore Rifles

I would suggest a leather covered decelerator, they are beautiful and absorb recoil very well! If you don't have someone local that can do it, I do them for 275.00 installed at your desired LOP. DRSS Life Member NRA Life Member NAHC Life Member "Life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun!"

west2721: When I got mine, the "standard pad" was a hard plastic buttplate giving a LOP of 14.5" to front trigger. What kind of pad is "standard" now? Mine went down to GSI and got cut down to same 14.5" LOP with a 1" Sporting Clays pad (Pachmayr Decelerator), plus an oil change and lube job. That Sporting Clays pad is a good one, and the only pad I would have other than a leather-coverd Decelerator. Here is what it looks like, colors lightened by the flash, it is really a dark charcoal gray: If you just want to add 1/2" to existing pad, you can use a leather slip-on:

Thanks for the help. Here is what my current pad looks like. I am sending the gun back to get the cross bolt worked on and figured I would get a new pad to increase the LOP at the same time. The "standard" pad looks similar to the sporting clays but not as thick, right? Seems about 5/8" eyeballing it, maybe a little less. The gun shoots nice groups but haven't found the right handload yet. Sure is a hoot to pull the trigger though.

Yes, there is a thinner version of the Sporting Clays pad. I can't see your pics from this "blocked" 'puter right now, will check later. Is it going to Herbert Wuhlmuth at GSI? He is good, in my experience. Greener crossbolt stiff? Maybe you just haven't shot it enough to break it in? Are you going to get the lock mechanisms cleaned and re-lubed while you are at it? That is always a good idea, especially if it still has the original factory grease in it. Yes, I still use the Galco slip-on leather pad over the 1" Sporting Clays pad. I might have had Herbert make it a 15" LOP instead, but I am happy with it as it is, 15" with the Galco slip-on and a 1" Pachmayr fixed pad. My Merkel feels naked without the Galco leather. Really comfortable with it. Mine is a great shooter too, a 470 NE. I like H4831, 108 to 110 grains, depending on the 500-grain bullet and brass, no filler. "George Hoffman Memorial Load." I also got good results with RL-15, around 89 to 92 grains, again depending on the 500-grain bullet make and brass make, plus Dacron filler 4 to 5 grains. You can get good results either way, all with the F-215 or GM215M primers by Federal, but you gotta work up your own loads. Use a chronograph. Work up again if you change any component, especially powder lot number. Federal factory loads were miserably variable over the chronograph, shot hat-sized groups. Those are said to be 87-grains RL-15 with no filler, and use the F-216 "Hot Primer."

I can see it now. That is the 0.8" Sporting Clays pad in black. Mine is 1" in "black." They make black and brown 0.8" and 1". Just switching to the 1" pad is not going to get you an extra 1/2", unless you also add a .3" spacer. Just slipping on a medium Galco, velcro fastening pad will add 1/2".

Yep, it is still stiff. And, yes, Herbert Wuhlmuth at GSI. I've shot it about 30 times. Stops at the last 3/8" so I have to push it over with the lever and of course really stiff on opening. Hasn't gotten any better for the last 20 shots so I figured it isn't going to get any better. I don't think the current pad is .8" but I should probably try the Galco before I change the pad just to make sure I'm going to like the longer LOP.
I'll have to remember to add that to the note when I ship.

I have two Merkel double rifles. They are a 140E, 9.3X74R which I had a 1" Pachmayer decellerator, and a 140.2 Safari 470NE, with a 1" Kick-Ese Both work fine to modirate the recoil. The length of pull was perfet with the stock rifle for me, so I kept that pull with the pad installed. Because the Merkel field grade double rifles are "ONE SIZE FIT'S ALL" the thin plastic butt plate is there to simply protect the wood, till a pad can be added to adjust the length of pull to the new owner. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

I ordered the Galco to try before I make the plunge and change the LOP. Anyone have pics of their leather covered pad. I'm sure there are lots on other posts but wouldn't know what to search for.
