what is the ballistic performance difference between the 9.3x74 and the 360 No. 2. Is there a compelling benefit of one over the other????

Practically speaking, the X74 is the logical choice.
But the 360No.2 does it with more class tu2

A vintage .360 No. 2 will most likely be regulated with a 320 gr. bullet. These yield great penetration and kill like hell! Big benefit of the 9.3x74R is the easy availability and cheaper price of componants.

I would say yes to your question - in a way. Loaded with the same bullet at the same velocity, the No.2 will inherently be at a lower pressure.
Don is right about the 320gr. bullet. Don't think I have seen a vintage double that was not regulated for it.
I haven't tried the 75% rule for mine yet but I would think a +/- 240gr bullet would be hitting close to 2500fps considering that 320gr is supposed to be at 2200fps.
If you are looking into a vintage double, I wouldn't think too much about performance comparisons. ultimately, you will be loading to whatever your particular rifle shoots well with. Also, the 360No.2 will kill anything on earth with the proper bullet and a well placed shot. In fact, so will the 9.3X74...

If it is a vintage gun with an original service charge of "55 grs cordite & 320 gr. bullet" you might try:

286 gr. bullet at 2500 FPS
232 gr. bullet at 2625 FPS

I have been told that they regulate quite well. Of course every double is different.

The 360 No2 case has much greater capacity than the 9.3x74R. It is (slightly) longer, larger in diameter and has less taper.
My Lang 360 No2 shot well with a variety of loads and bullets, inc 232gn Norma, 270gn Speer and 286gn Woodleigh.
Don't get too ambitious when working up any light bullet loads though, DR's are not as forgiving as bolt guns if the pressures get a bit too high.

500,

360 No2 NE has a smaller base diameter than the 450 NE.

I measured original Kynoch cases and the base of the 360 is .537" and the 450 base is .543"

The site that Mike linked to above is WAAAY off on the measurements for the 360No.2
Wait...they have two listings, the second one is more accurate. The first is the 8X57-360 I guess...

Yes, 360 No2 formed from 450 NE will often not fit the chambers of DR's due to the larger base diameter.
