Well the problem was fixed by Duane Wiebe... I cannot thank him enough...
The rusting and bleeding got worse.. When I would shoot many shots (10) or more and really heat up the steel, moisture beads like sweat would form on the rib near the front and rear sights...
Will, we did what you stated and look at the pics of what was found...

This is what came out of the drilled hole...

This is what came out under air pressure

Mike: Did he indicate how the moisture may have accumulated between the ribs ? Is this something that happens to all SXS's over time ?

Frank,

Duane said that he felt Famars did not do there job of making of making it moisture free after the barrels joined...

After he drilled the hole and the first pice shows water came out after turned upside down.. Forced air and look at the second pic and he could not believe what came out.. Barrels were then put on a dry heat to cook for a week before inserting oil and other sealing products to prevent rust and seal the inside...

Mike,

Same thing happened to a pair of new steel barrels made for my 1899 damascus 12 gauge Dickson. The maker apparently took a shortcut in the fabrication as liquid began to seep out at the first range session. I sent them back to the UK and he did the necessary without demurral. Little scary at first. I'm assuming it was fluid from the rust bluing process.

Glad you've sorted yours out.

Regards, Tim

I bought a damascus-barreled hammer gun a couple of years back, & after 14 rounds through the barrels at the skeet range, the barrels literally split apart from the corrosion between the barrels (totally apart). Luckily, the dealer that sold the shotgun to me (Hill Rod & Gun, Montana) cheerfully refunded my money & took the gun back. It's always been a concern for me when I buy a SXS knowing what the condition is between the barrels.

Did a firing test of the returned rifle... Fire 20 shots and did not get any sweating at all...

Thank you again Duane Wiebe...

Later in the day my hands were sore from the gripping onto the double and holding her there... Shot very good and even had two groups of around 1.2 inches and the other around 1.5 inches firing right then left barrel...

I am all smiles. Big Grin

Mike

Mike,

I think you should dump that rifle ASAP. It is defective piece of crap!! The barrels obviously are warped and there is a lot of corrosion between the ribs. This is an unsafe gun. It may blow up in your hands the next time you fire it.

Send me a PM and we can discuss how I could take the gun off your hands.

Michael,

I don't remember what I told you but it is impossible to keep moisture (or air) from the inside of a rib. Even stainless steel welds leak like a sieve.

Though it is probably considered heresy to put a vent hole or two in a rib, it is the only practical way of avoiding the moisture problem.

Just don't go back and plug the holes!

Will,

We weld high pressure pipe all of the time, including steel and stainless steel high pressure steam pipe and gas pipe. It doesn't leak if done properly.

This is what the R and S stamps are for.

Neither does a proper high temp solder or brazing job leak.

There should never be more moisture between than was in the air between the ribs at the time the ribs were soldered.

Well, there are leaks and then there are leaks. But I won't argue the case! Obviously, not all brazing is air tight!!
